Against the Odds- Going in one week to make the Runners film

Sometimes you have a dream or you work towards some goal and then you fail to reach it. As you all know, that was the case of what happened with this film back in March on Kickstarter. Even though so many people showed up on Kickstarter, and so many people were in support, I just wasn’t able to do it at the time. I felt I let you all down. I now see that I made a number of mistakes in my funding goal and my presentation. I did gather the resources and support I had left and went to Kauai to make a film about monk seals, which a number of you have been part of. That was a great journey and I’m currently editing that project. Its going well and I hope to have it completed in a couple of months. I learned a lot I didn’t know prior to making the trip and my hope is that film will help look at all sides of why the monk seal isn’t being accepted by the Native population. When I was in Kauai, I offered a young backpacker named Jordan a ride and found out he was a filmmaker from Utah. He was enthusiastic to help me with my shooting, was excited about my brand of “intuitive filmmaking”, and found we worked well as a team. I told him about the runner’s film I hadn’t made and showed him the Kickstarter page and video. He volunteered to come with me to make the film. He speaks fluent Spanish and is also willing to camp with the runners. Most importantly, he agreed to cover his own expenses if needed, which was the key that opened the door to being able to go. There is another race in July in Copper Canyon. This is not the race in Urique organized by Micah True, but another run by the people of the canyon. Jordan (http://www.facebook.com/jordan.kartchner.1) leaves Provo Utah by Greyhound and after stopping in Las Vegas arrives in Flagstaff at 2 am on July 8th. Mary Black of Flagstaff (who we only know through Facebook) is generously picking him up at 2 am, taking him home to rest and then driving him to Sedona. At 11 am we drive to Nogales and stay at my friend Kristen Dyments house (thank you Kristen!) 630 am on the morning of July 10th we drive to the border, leave our car, walk across the border, take a taxi to the bus station and then take a bus 9 hours away to Los Mochis. We are hosted/sponsored by the Hotel Zar in Los Mochis. 5 am the next day we get on the train for Creel, and then take a bus to Guochichi, the town the race is being held in. I don’t actually have hotel reservations but I do have a room in somones moms home I can rent, so I’m crossing my finger that works out. Jordan will be camping. We have two Sony HDV cameras to shoot with, recently cleaned (another sponsor being Mikes Cameras in Boulder) and two Go Pro cameras with chest mounts. We plan to attach these to some of the runners. I had hoped to be able to pay the runners for this when I made the original plan but this is no longer possible. Creatively, in effect what we are doing is going on a fishing expedition. We have the gear, motivation, background and subject and we will see what we get. One thing many filmmakers promise is big audiences or lots of money to their sponsors or investors. I don’t feel I can do that with any integrity. I do know this is a important subject though that interests many people and I have already talked to Jordan and agreed that if the film does make any money, after paying ourselves back for expenses we will give half of the profits back to the Tarahumara. We wish for our hearts to be in the right place and we wish for this film to do good. Special thanks to Vi Anne Marie Traynor, who contributed her original pledge of $350. This money will pay for at least a good chunk of our bus and train tickets.
