An untold piece of Civil Rights History, buried for generations. Now on film for the first time.
Thank you all! Your support has been a blessing.
The 1898 Wilmington Race Riot is the only coup de ‘etat, or violent overthrow of a government, in U.S. History. Not to mention that it was a springboard for the Jim Crow laws that disenfranchised black citizens through the 1960s.
If you’ve never heard of it, you’ll begin to understand why we are making the short docudrama titled “The Red Cape”. This project does not aim to open old wounds, point fingers, or take a political “stance”. Our hope is to present the past in a way that gives insight and allows us to make our great nation even better.
A group of young filmmakers, including many UNCW Film Students, has worked tirelessly to recreate the event on film. Hundreds of people have contributed in various ways, resulting in a project with stellar production standards and intensive historical accuracy. Now we need your help so it can be seen at universities, colleges, and festivals across the country. Your hard-earned dollars literally shine a light on Civil Rights History.
As American Citizens, we can’t thank you enough. As filmmakers, we solemnly pledge to honor your support.
You can still donate with a check, even after the campaign finishes. Any contribution helps make the film even better. Make it out to "The Red Cape" and mail to: BB&T, 173 S. Main Street, Sparta, NC 28675

BRENDON MURPHY (@RedCapeMovie)
In addition to producing independent films, Brendon manages a production company in Atlanta, creating content for clients like Aaron’s, Comcast, UPS, McKesson, and the Atlanta Falcons. He cut his teeth in animation and visual effects, starting with the short film "Ringo" (2005), which received a Grand Jury Prize at SIFF for animation. He graduated from UNCW's Film Studies Program.
In 2011, Nelson was one of only 25 students selected to attend the Peter Stark Producing Program within the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic arts. In addition to shooting and directing numerous short films, Nelson is currently an intern at Kennedy/Marshall in LA, which is owned and operated by legendary producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (whose credits include the Indiana Jones films, E.T., the Back to the Future Series, the Jurassic Park films, Schindler's List, The Jason Bourne series, and many more). Nelson also holds a degree in Film Studies from UNCW.
Corey has worked on countless film and TV productions, primarily in the locations and production departments. His credits include Ironman 3, One Tree Hill, and Eastbound & Down. In addition to associate producing The Red Cape, he managed the project's locations department. He also graduated from UNCW with degrees in Business and Film Studies.
Jon also joined The Red Cape producing team while attending UNCW's Film Studies Program. After interning with producer Scott Rudin in LA (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,The Social Network, No Country For Old Men, and many more), he took a video producing job at DuPont. Jon is currently 2nd AD on the Discovery Channel's "American Haunting".
After her first production meeting on The Red Cape, it was clear that Danielle would be a cornerstone of the producing team. As a UNCW student, she single-handedly revived the campus radio station, which had been inactive for 7 years. Her get-it-done attitude served The Red Cape just as effectively, greatly expanding the film's community support.
