In the cold Minnesotan winter, an old man faces his own mortality after the death of a good friend to the frozen lake where he lives.
"THE POLAR BEAR CLUB" is the story of an elderly man, Harold, who leads a group of friends once a week out across the frozen lake behind his home in order to do one thing - jump in. The freezing water and painful cold brings each man a renewed feeling of youth and adventure, a feeling they wouldn't give up for anything. When one of the members dies during an outing, the group's faith in what they are doing is shattered. What began as a harmless outing, a glimmer into how they felt as young adults, quickly becomes the defining moment for them as old men. Nearing the end of their lives, the members start searching for meaning as life stops giving and begins to start taking away...
About our film: scroll down for concept art!
I co-wrote this project with Ben Zschunke during the junior and senior years while we were attending NCSA's School of Filmmaking. I wanted to write a film that I could realistically make, something that I would enjoy watching, or any other film nerd for that matter, just as much as someone like my mom or dad could enjoy too. I also wanted to write something that was more of a character story, something relatable and on a subject that I regularly think about: What will my life be like when I'm older?
I know I'm young now but one day I'll be 70 and wondering where all those years went. I feel like I've observed that common fact from many of my elders over the years and its something that intrigues me. Where will I be in 50 years? What life choices cause someone to end up in a nursing home, or a florida beach house, surrounded by loving family, or alone? These are all topics the film deals with. If you have ever thought about these things, I'm sure you will love this movie.
It also deals with the subject of health and happiness. I personally don't think you can have one without the other. Harold is physically a machine, 10 years younger than he should be- it is his activity that keeps him alive. At some point in life, everyone loses something they love. Harold doesn't want to accept that, even though its happening right in front of his eyes; he almost naively believes he will live forever. He's inherently flawed, but thats what makes him and the story worth telling, because we all are.
Our film will go into production in roughly a year. I am asking Kickstarter (all of you) to help us fund roughly 1/3 of our total production budget. Our film doesn't have any extravagant production requirements, special effects, or overzealous needs, but we believe in this script and we want to make it as good as it can possibly be. All we are asking is for the ability to house, feed, and keep our crew and actors warm and comfortable while they work hard hours for us in the frigid Minnesotan elements. Anything left over from that will be put directly into what we see on screen, such as location rentals, props, costumes, ect.
I'm not making this project just to make a movie. The only reason I want to do this is because Ben and I finished a script, we looked at it and said to ourselves, this is realistic, moving, and do-able. Its not a thriller, its not a horror film, its just a true to life story that we want to tell. That's the truth.
So please, help us make this film. I can not be more appreciative to those of you who do decide to donate. It means a lot and I promise you it will be put to good use!
