Update #2: Happy 2012!

Posted on January 5

Dear friends, family, colleagues, and supporters,

For new years, I went deep into the forests of Big Sur with some friends to commune with nature and wait out the apocalypse. We emerged with the world intact and some very sore legs! I experienced lots of pareidolia on the trails and am now about to embark in earnest on the next chapter of this animation odyssey. I’ll be working on the puppet of Margit (my great grandmother) and will soon be animating the Danube scene (an interpreted re-telling of her WWII survival tale).  Here is a detail still of one of the main puppets—the body/landscape of the protagonist. I’m wishing you all an incredibly fruitful year, full of love, magic, wonder and art.

Thank you again for your amazing support for “Pareidolia.”

I will keep you updated, and over the next few months look out for your rewards in the mail (I’m aiming for June or sooner).

All my best,

Maya

Update #1: THANK YOU ALL!!!

Posted on December 2

Dear Friends, Family, Colleagues and Supporters,

A GIANT THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!! I wasn't sure if I was going to make my goal just a week ago, and magically you all came through!!!!!! Thank you so very much for supporting this project and for supporting the arts (especially in this day and age)! I was recently at the farmers market here in Echo Park in Los Angeles and the guy selling my vegetables had this wonderful quote up on a chalkboard in front of his stand: "You must participate relentlessly in the manifestation of your own blessings."--Liz Gilbert. Kickstarter has been a fascinating journey in attempting to manifest the nuts and bolts of making a project come to life. I am truly so touched by everyone's support and am working relentlessly to make a film of strange beauty, poetry, and authentic expression.

I will keep you all posted as things progress. I am shooting the set on a Motion Control rig at Calarts over the next week and a half. (Photo of set attached and a still of a composite from the film). And as a side note, I thought it would interest you to know about some fantastic news I just heard about this morning about a project I worked on a few months ago. I directed one of the music videos for the band "TV on the Radio"'s 2011 album called "Nine Types of Light" which is also a movie which includes my video as part of it (there are 9 other directors involved). The movie just got nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY for BEST LONG FORM MUSIC VIDEO!!!  I included the links below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv0G5ibi3VY    this is the individual video I directed called "New Cannonball Blues"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B5GP0AiQMc this is the whole move called "Nine Types of Light" in which "New Cannonball Blues" is a chapter.

Ok, off to create!!!!!

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!

As a child, Maya used to sleep with a pencil under her pillow so she could draw her dreams onto her bedroom walls the next morning. Since then, she has traveled the Arctic to study Ice Sculpture, lived in a Parisian squatted bank building making surrealist costumes and performances, traversed India to study religion and textiles, and began animating as a grad student at Harvard. Before that she studied Fine Art at The Cooper Union and Hunter College in NYC.

Recent projects include directing the music video "New Cannonball Blues" for TV on the Radio, as part of the larger feature film "Nine Types of Light" and co-curating a 22-artist animated exquisite corpse. Maya has worked on projects with a diverse group of filmmakers/animators and artists including: Michel Gondry, Aaron Rose, TV on the Radio, Isaiah Seret, Janie Geiser, and Jamie Caliri.
