About this project
“Pareidolia” will be a 5-7 minute animation film and an art show/installation.
Directed and Animated by Maya Erdelyi.www.mayaerdelyi.com
Music and Sound Design by Paul Fraser. www.paulfrasermusic.com
Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which meaning is created from random stimulus--for example, when you cloud-watch and see faces or animals.
This multi-faceted project will be a veiled stream-of-consciousness self-portrait, exploring the borders between reality and imaginary dream realms. Using pareidolic phenomena as a visual and conceptual framework, the film will be an attempt to locate myself in the mythic chaos of life by trying to construct meaning from the random stimulus of my own thoughts, memories, dreams and personal history. The range of subjects include: Hungarian World War II refugees, imaginary creatures, Colombian Presidents, death rituals in India, anatomical landscapes, bees and dream imagery.
METHOD:The process of making Pareidolia is meant to be improvisational and intuitive. The animation will use a wide variety of techniques--with a focus on cut-paper stop-motion. I will use collaged and sewn materials. There will be combinations of hand-drawn animation, puppetry, and After-Effects and Flash. All of these elements will be brought together digitally in post-production.As this is my last year of the MFA program in Experimental Animation at CalArts, I will be spending the next few months in complete dedication to the completion of this animation and installation.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: The financial support raised through this kickstarter will go towards art and filmmaking supplies: cells, paint, a camera, a tripod, lights, hard drives, paper, software. Also, I'd like to be able to give a stipend for the hard work involved in composing the music, and other production assistance. Also I will need money for sound mixing, editing assistance and clean-up help. Your support will also help me create dvds, posters, and allow me to afford film festival fees (which includes the shipping and production of dvds and merchandise like postcards, t-shirts and special edition box sets). Also, since I'd like to create an installation component, I will want to frame the art work that is created for Pareidolia.

As a child, Maya used to sleep with a pencil under her pillow so she could draw her dreams onto her bedroom walls the next morning. Since then, she has traveled the Arctic to study Ice Sculpture, lived in a Parisian squatted bank building making surrealist costumes and performances, traversed India to study religion and textiles, and began animating as a grad student at Harvard. Before that she studied Fine Art at The Cooper Union and Hunter College in NYC.
Recent projects include directing the music video "New Cannonball Blues" for TV on the Radio, as part of the larger feature film "Nine Types of Light" and co-curating a 22-artist animated exquisite corpse. Maya has worked on projects with a diverse group of filmmakers/animators and artists including: Michel Gondry, Aaron Rose, TV on the Radio, Isaiah Seret, Janie Geiser, and Jamie Caliri. Her award-winning animations have been shown at various festivals/venues and museums internationally. Most recently: The Museo de Ponce in Puerto Rico, The London International Animation Festival, The Melbourne International Animation Festival, MoCA LA, The Hammer Museum, The Museum of Arts and Design NYC, The Big Screen Project NYC, The Harvard Film Archives, RedCat, The Prague Quadrennial 2011, Anilogue Film Festival, among others.
