About this project

The ArtPrize - Project Description-

ArtPrize Jukebox is the NEW concept of the "international painting duo", the collaborative artists, Royce Deans from Michigan and Tali Farchi from The Netherlands and Israel.

The last several years we have worked in different parts of the world where we have collaborated with musicians, dancers, poets, architects and cities. Each time has created a unique body of work. Most recently we did a large project in Chicago that involved thirteen different bands over the course of the eleven day project that was hugely successful. (See our blog www.colorboration.blogspot.com for the whole story.)

The ArtPrize Jukebox project is a living exhibition that will grow to at least sixty-eight 48" X 48" (120 X 120 cm) paintings on wood panels. Instead of live musicians, the public will be a very serious and important part of the process. ArtPrize is the world's largest art competition that based strongly around the framework of community. We have designed Jukebox to reflect this framework.

Visitors will be able to plug their iPods with their own play lists into a sound system; their musical choices will shape what we paint. The songs that will be chosen will be documented and posted along with the name of the contributing visitor as a permanent description that will accompany the paintings as they are exhibited.

This sort of involvement and interaction with the people around us suits our vision of collaboration. We will soak up inspiration, in this case, as visitors participate with the music that means so much to them. This process we have found helps to form new friendships and connections that continue on well beyond the project’s completion.

ArtPrize Jukebox will be hosted by Steepletown Neighborhood Services in the Steepletown Center at 671 Davis Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Live Painting with Music Sessions-
During our Jukebox - painting with music sessions we will be working with the music that visitors will bring to us on their iPods. Our studio will be set up with a coffee shop/art cafe atmosphere that anyone can come and sit with a cup of coffee, tea or water and a snack while they enjoy the art. As the first bit of music fills the space, we will channel the rhythm and flavor of the sound. ArtPrize visitors will witness the creation of our spontaneous abstract paintings that develop before their eyes.

Royce in Chicago - © Brooke Herbert

The project will be a demonstration of diversity as the music will change as randomly as the people that come to see the installation. Those changing flavors of sound will echo exactly the variety of all those that come to experience ArtPrize.

Tali and Royce will be painting constantly during the hours of operation; by the end of each day at least ten more expressive paintings will be added to the exhibition. In the end of the week the exhibition will contain approximately sixty-eight paintings.

Exhibition Space-
- Consists of random music provided by the visitors to the space
- Two painters working live on while the music is played
- The artwork itself is 48” X 48” (120 X 120cm)
- The artwork is projected on the walls for all to see
- An intimate comfortable cafe setting where visitors and artists can interact
- The art will be added to an exhibition throughout the building

Behind every great painting is a great study and gesture. Our way of working allows us to capture on paper the genesis of each painting which contains the essence of our first impressions. For the pledge of fifty dollars you can own one of those unique captured moments by either Tali or Royce. These one of a kind pieces of art will be painted on paper approximately 20" X 20". We will also send you a postcard from our studio.

Pledge $100 or more Pledge $100 or more

Since Tali and Royce will be painting side by side to the same music, there will always be two paintings in progress at any one time. For a pledge of $100 you will get a set of 20" X 20" studies that were described under the fifty dollar reward. Think of it as a bit of her and a bit of him for one low price. Not only that but we will send you a postcard from our Grand Rapids studio.

Quite honestly, this is the best deal of the campaign. For $500 you will get one of our 48" X 48" paintings that normally sell for $2000. There are two reasons we are willing to offer these paintings at this price. First is that we really appreciate your support that much and secondly, you will be committing to one of these paintings before it is even painted. These paintings are on cradled wooden panels all ready to be hung on your wall. If you would like you can choose to send us a play list to work from and then we will name the painting after you.

There are at least a couple of people out there that just cannot understand what Royce is doing with his hair. Is he in some sort of mid life crisis or is it some kind of lame personal expression. Anyhow, here is your chance to make what you might consider 'a difference!' If you are the lucky person to secure this singular pledge amount, you will insure that Royce will get his hair cut in our studio in Steepletown Center during ArtPrize. And since the only person that has cut Royce's hair in the last 23 years has been Heidi Hallett-treece at Pure Essence Salon in Traverse City, if this reward is captured, Heidi will be on hand to do the honors. The cut hair will be donated to Locks of Love.

If the $500 dollar reward was the best deal, this one is the Crown Jewel. If you pledge $1000, you can send us a play list and we will create a diptych of the two paintings Tali and Royce will create and name after you. Again, we can only make this available because we appreciate your support more than we can express in words, and again, you will be saying yes to this formidable piece of art before it has been created. Remember that Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition, there are no rules about going over our goal.

Our art has taken us to Europe, Israel, Prague, the US and Canada. From small halls and unusual spaces, to huge stages of fancy theaters. Everywhere we get inspiration from the location that we find ourselves, but the inspiration is not only limited to our visual surroundings such as the landscape. We particularly find a special source of energy from people. When those people share their favorite music with us it is a festival of inspiration.

Royce grew up in Chicagoland and graduated from the American Academy of Art. Tali was raised in Haifa, Israel and attended art school in Amsterdam and now lives in The Netherlands.

Over the years we have found collaborating to be most inspiring and we have had many rich experiences making art in some wonderful and unusual situations. We truly are looking forward to having many more during ArtPrize in September.
