I'm a beekeeper in southwest Michigan who is trying to save the art of beekeeping.
I'm a beekeeper in southwest Michigan who is trying to help save the art of beekeeping.
Poor animal husbandry and a shallow gene pool has led the commercial bee industry to seek a pharmacological solution, but their current practices are unsustainable.
I'm trying to help develop a better solution to the plight of the honeybee. And I need your help.
I'd like to expand my apiary with an outyard to test new beekeeping techniques and develop some new honey bee strains, but money is tight and bee hives are expensive. Can you help?
If you can't afford to contribute financially you can still help. Just post the project link and tell others about it. Every little effort helps!

You can embed the video in a blog too with the code Kickstarter provides.
I'll be blogging about the whole process on the Mother Earth News website. Here's the first post: http://www.motherearthnews.com/honeybees-and-beekeeping/saving-the-honeybees.aspx
Thanks! Bee good!
P.S. The funding goal has been met, but there are still some useful tools that would be helpful. Any extra funds will (of course) still go to the project.
Here's how much the hives will cost. I've chosen Dadant because I can pick them up and save the significant shipping costs. For 20 hives:
Beekeepers may notice that there is no foundation in that order. Here's why: http://www.bushfarms.com/beesfoundationless.htm
Here's a partial wishlist for any donations beyond the goal.
Thank you to everyone who has helped. You are truly an amazing group of people.

This is the "apitherapy package." None of the other rewards go with this one. Just bee products that some people use as health aids. You will get two pints of honey, a package of propolis and a package of freeze dried pollen. My honey is "rough filtered" meaning it has small propolis and wax particles in it from crush and strain harvesting that is strained through cheesecloth (you likely won't notice, but it's in there). It is always raw, so it will tend to crystallize. The bees will be in southwest Michigan surrounded by woodland. Many hay fields are in the harvest zone and very little, if any, sprayed monoculture that the bees will visit is nearby.
