Waving Not Drowning! physical theatre company has been invited to take its innovative new work looking at Hamlet's Ophelia to Poland.
Ophelia, Interrupted is a new physical theatre piece using the character of Ophelia from Hamlet to explore notions of reconciliation and self-realisation. We present four different encounters with Ophelia. Four women from different cultural and theatrical backgrounds - each is Ophelia, but a different aspect of her. Each must confront and struggle with her own demons if she is to avoid the same tragic fate as Shakespeare's character. Each must confront and address issues specific to her Ophelia in her journey towards becoming whole. Central to this is that each must encounter Hamlet - her own personal Hamlet - in order to reconcile the fractured parts of her self.
Our piece ultimately is about the journey towards awakening. The character of Ophelia is a site of memory, fantasy, projection, and desire. She continually takes on new forms because she is what one brings to her. In our piece we use these shifting perspectives to explore various alternative narratives to received one of destruction. We ask the question: in what ways can she (and we) confront what oppresses us and reach a higher level of awareness in our lives.
Ophelia, Interrupted started development in 2012 as part of a company residency at the Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, Poland. Since then it has been continually developed via residencies in spaces in London, and has been given two well received work-in-progress showings. The director and one of the actors of Waving Not Drowning! were previously members of Polish company Theatre ZAR, which is based at the Grotowski Institute, and the centre has maintained a keen interest in their work. Now that the piece is almost ready to be performed, the Grotowski Institute has invited the the company back to Poland for a week's residency to finalise and show the piece.
Why we are on Kickstarter
Waving Not Drowning! is an emerging, London-based physical theatre company which has been attracting a lot interest in its work. We are a multi-national company, with performers from Portugal, Poland, Greece, Australia and England. We have been presented with an amazing opportunity - an invitation to present our work at the prestigious Grotowski Institute in Poland at the end of May. This means we would be able to have our work more widely seen internationally, while continuing to develop our relationship with this important theatre institution, before coming back to London, where we will perform the piece in June/July this year.
But even though all other costs will be covered, our travel costs will not be. Which means that we really need money to get our people to Poland and back. Waving Not Drowning! is an unfunded company with limited means. Every penny of your donation will go towards paying airfares to get all our company of nine people to Poland - and back to London.
And every penny will help us get there!
Director: Andrei Biziorek.
Performers: Ana Andrade, Alex Hanly, Catarina Moreno, Ewa Pasikowska, Konstantinos Thomaidis.
In this piece we are using text by poet Catherine Smith, with her very generous permission. Catherine is published by Smith Doorstop.
And a BIG thank you to film maker Karolina Malinowska for creating our video.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For our Kickstarter project the risks are fairly low. We have made a very modest request simply to get our company to our destination to be able to accept our invitation. Failing a complete collapse of the airline industry, we are reasonably confident we will be able to complete our project!
