Overview
What would you say if just by contributing to this project you could not only help raise awareness of a fading art form, but also get a cool piece to show to your friends or give as a gift? I am trying to bring back the art of illuminated lettering by spreading the words (pun intended).
What is illuminated lettering and calligraphy?
If you have ever seen old (and I mean really old) documents that have one or two letters that are big and have pretty artwork around them, you have seen samples of illuminated letters (if you haven't, no worries, just check out this link: http://tinyurl.com/3jh8r8p). Each of the pieces you will receive from your funding will have at least one illuminated letter. Calligraphy is the fancy writing you see on things like wedding invitations and will be all of the text that is not the illuminated letters.
The entire process is done completely by hand, so you will not be getting a computer printout. I use real dip ink pens and high quality paint and gilding supplies to make the letters.
The Funding
All of the funding for this will go to the materials needed to make the pieces. This includes: paper, ink, nibs, paint, gilding materials and postage for the final products.

I mostly use a thick card stock from Strathmore that has a vellum texture. Real vellum is stretched calf skin and is not very animal friendly, so this is a nice substitute.

Most of the letters depend on the rest of the text on the page, if there is a ton of text, the letters are typically a bit smaller. I try not to have the illuminated letters get any smaller then 1.5inX1.5in, and if there is not very much text, they can be as large as 4inX3in.

Not a problem. If it is a few words over it is normally fine, but let me know if it is going to go over 10 or so extra.
