On the weekend of July 6th I am going to build a whale, float it down the Wabash river, then light it on fire.
YOU MAY SEE A WHALE is a community sculpture project.
The main goal is to bring a large group of people together to accomplish a single task (to build a whale). Inspired by the Dean Young poem 'Whale Watch,' the idea is to create a nature-focused object that inspires humanity and kindness in those that participate. The whale will be formed, accomplish its basic purpose by floating in water, and then be burned in a ceremonial fire.
The project will take place in New Harmony, Indiana the weekend of July 6th, with the final ceremony on July 8th. Organized and hosted by Karina Cochran.
The town of New Harmony holds a significance. New Harmony has a history of various utopian communities (both the Rapphities and Owenites). This will be another social experiment to add to it's list.
