About this project
This is the premier production of "Poochie," a play about a family dealing with Alzheimer's Disease. As we see Edna forget her life, Ruth learns to manage the person she's becoming without the memories she and her mother have shared.
Her challenges caring for her mother are now showing up in her other primary life relationships -- those with her husband, daughter, brother, and dog.
Performance dates are Oct. 19, 20, 21, and 22 -- at the Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St., Salisbury, NC.
Justin Dionne, who is a ball of energy, is directing.
This play will surely start a conversation about dealing with Alzheimer's Disease, but we'll also be having a conversation after the shows, for those who want to stay and participate in a talk back with an expert from the Alzheimer's Association.
This will be a low-budget production in the black box theatre at the Looking Glass Artist Collective in Salisbury, NC. The set will be simple, with production emphasis on the acting and the development of the script for future productions.
This also launches a new theatre company -- Spoken Space Theatre -- that will give birth to more new plays in the future. This intimate, affordable space is perfect for giving new plays a shot. It's affordable, which keeps the ticket price down, and the Looking Glass Artist Collective has a great local following. There's no better way to realize new work than by giving it to actors who then can give it to an audience.
The money will go towards theatre rental and set. The theatre is very small and tickets will be $10.

Alzheimer's is an epidemic. A lot of care is required. The needs evolve and change. It lasts for many years. It stresses families and relationships in families. This play will provide an opening to that conversation.

Sam Post's plays have been produced in Minneapolis, New York, Charlotte, Melbourne, and numerous other cities. His plays have been used in many classrooms around the world and published by Palmetto Play Publishers, Brooklyn Publishers, Direct Plays, and in an upcoming acting textbook by Laura Facciponti Bond. Three of his plays were published in the 2010 edition of the North Carolina Literary Review. He has twice won Regional Artist Project Grants from the North Carolina Arts Council -- in 1996 for playwriting and in 2006 for filmmaking.
