Underneath is a new evening-length work made in collaboration with Wobbly (Yulia Arakelyan and Erik Ferguson), performers Mizu Desierto and Nathan H.G. and musician Roland Toledo. Using a blend of contemporary dance, butoh, theatre and song, Underneath tells a tale of the subconscious with the fluid timing of a dream. Peeling back preconceived notions of beauty and belonging, Underneath reveals an inner landscape of isolation, deformity and domination as four individuals seek the possibility of a love that, perhaps, heals all wounds. This sometimes confrontational sometimes sweet new work manages to crack open the mind without leaving the viewer shattered.
Underneath will be performed in Portland, OR at the Headwaters Theatre November 30-December 8, 2012.
We need your help in the next 30 days to make this show a success! Funds raised through Kickstarter will go toward paying the performers for their creativity, dedication and hours and hours of rehearsal time over the last 2 years. Wobbly is currently working with an amazing musician Roland Toledo, who is creating an original sound score for UNDERNEATH. With your help, we can make sure that the performers and our musician are fairly compensated for their work and dedication to this project.

This is the first full length production for Wobbly and it has not been without its challenges. We have been through almost two full years of residency at the Headwaters Theatre and one of our original performers relocated and left the project. Working with such a small fringe group and such organic subjective material means no understudies and no substitutions so we had to develop a lot of new material after that. Working with chronic health conditions and disabilities has also left us vulnerable to illness and we lost several weeks along the way to pneumonia, and other health crises. We are in the home stretch now and taking very good care of ourselves in preparation for the big show. Our biggest challenge now is actually navigating and promoting the kickstarter campaign itself. We took a big risk in trying to run a very short 30 day campaign to capitalize on the urgent enthusiasm of our fan base and did not calculate for the time it took to edit the final video, verify a bank account, enter the kickstarter queue, etc. At this late date we are forced to bite our nails and continue to fundraise THROUGH the entire show. We have the generous support of The Headwaters Theatre, Water in the Desert, Regional Arts and Culture Council, Oregon Cultural Trust and Multnomah County Cultural Coalition. Its enough to put the show on but we still have brilliant and deserving performers, sound and lighting artists to pay and we are threatened by our own deep debts. Without the success of this Kickstarter campaign we risk ruining some critical artistic relationships, and we risk not being able to absorb our own debts. Yes, there is always some chance that someone gets sick or injured, or some other catastrophe interferes but we prefer to think that the show is going to go on, we are so close it has to go on. But will we be able to celebrate its success and sow the seeds for the future of the unique and wonderful project? With YOUR support, we will!
