I want to tell the story of a family that fights together weekend after weekend and the way it strengthens bonds. I want to explain what different karts there are and what certain drivers like about the different classes. Show that its a sport where kids can find motivation to stay on the right path in school and in life to continue doing something that they love. And also to show that karting can be incredibly exciting and that you guys are fleeting real machines that have high tolerances and take alot of skill and understanding to drive.
One of the main issues I had when telling strangers about the films that I was making, before they had the chance to see them, was that they didn't take the sport very seriously at all. Often getting responses like, "How can some Go-Kart guys afford to take you to Vegas to shoot video for them?" It just isn't recognized as a serious sport to the general masses. That's what I aim to change as much as I possibly can.
I'd also like to show people how they themselves can get into the sport and start competing. Because they should, its a hell of a sport that is amazing amounts of fun to be a part of.
People start life long relationships with other drivers and kart shops and sponsors within karting. This is what I want to show about the sport.
The Where and When
I've chosen four events, three of which are SKUSA pro tour races, to attend in order to shoot this film. Logistically, primarily filming SKUSA events makes it more feasible to meet the project budget goal because I have more connections and leeway with the organizers, teams and drivers. I'd love to cover all karting organizations and more races, but I simply don't have a $100,000 budget to fly, stay, and rent for this to be possible.
So far the schedule is tentative, but it's strongly going in the direction of, Summer Nationals, Lancaster GP, Rock Island GP, and Super Nationals. If this comes together soon enough we may be able to get out to the Texas ProKart Challenge in Denton TX, especially because it's a local event. The bigger the budget the farther this can go. But at this point, this is what we are shooting for.
There are few sports that can incorporate excitement, thrill, speed, and even family in one place. Karting can get the blood flowing and the excitement going, yet, at the same time, it possesses the ability to create an extremely unique and powerful family setting. Consider all this, and the fact that if you've ever driven a proper kart (not a concession/rental kart, which pales in comparison), you'll know exactly why I want to shoot this film. Kart racing is simply amazing. I dare you to find me 2.5 lateral G's for under $3k...
So where's the money going? Aside from the funding that the crew needs for equipment, as well as the fact that we will be working many long hours for very little to make this happen, we will inevitably need a hefty amount to pull off a proper cinematic documentary. I promise, this is no easy task. Anything over the goal will only help the film that much more. Another day with a phantom, or a cable cam, helicopter aerials, everything helps.
We will need a plethora of DSLR cameras that will be capturing a lot of the action, lucky for us we have a handful at our disposal already. Unfortunately, these cameras aren't always big screen quality. They will serve for some of the shots, but, in the end, we'll need bigger guns. I could get really geeky about it, but I'll spare you for now. I will, however, answer any and all individual questions on the subject if you'd care to know why. The cameras I'm talking about rent for $1500 a day for the typical setup, which doesn't include the pricey lenses that we will also need to rent. The killer camera, however, will be a Phantom. These guys come in at about $5k a day. The more footage with these that we can get the more we'll be able to make you drool over karting. So far the budget is only going to get us two days worth.
An obvious one, but it needs to be addressed anyways. Hotels, cars, you know, the works. I know you guys are traveling to these things too, you know it costs an arm and a leg. We plan on trying to travel with teams or drivers as much as possible to get B-role but the inevitable plane tickets will have to happen time to time. Oh yeah, try checking 4 or 5 heavy camera equipment bags with an airline. Hello baggage fees.
So, you've got great video, yeah? Well, stick it to a crap song and guess what? Now you've got a crap edit. Music makes night and day differences. The good stuff costs a pretty penny to licence. Not only that but you have to negotiate per song with the labels. It's not fun, but it's necessary.
As you can see, doing it right costs money, and I'm already trying to run this on the cheap, if you take all things into account. I won't do it if it can't be done right. The crew's time, connections, and other ancillaries are really being stressed to make this happen, but we couldn't be happier to be doing it for any other sport. We're ecstatic about getting this project on its feet, but your help as a sporting community is critical to its survival.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
