About this project
Lucian Blaga is by many accounts the most important presence in Romanian cultural life of the 20th century, the only Romanian to have been nominated to the Nobel Prize for Literature in this time frame. Caron's Boat is an overwhelming account of facts, times and circumstances that he lived during the 4th, 5th and 6th decades of 20th centuries, a time of historical transformations for Romania and Europe. It is a book with a strong lyrical side, that also contains elements of theater, mysticism, philosophy, religion, folklore, and the analysis of people and surroundings done by a truly encyclopedic spirit.
This first English Edition of Caron's Boat was started as a "labor of love" project, with the intent to share something extraordinary that I'm sure will enchant the reader who has a bit of patience and curiosity. Lucian Blaga's poems and theater plays were so far translated in Italian, German, Hungarian, French, Spanish, Croatian, some of his philosophical essays were also translated in German, but so far his only two novels have not found their way in the international literature, even if they undoubtedly deserve it.
This project was started with two translators (one of which is myself, also acting as Editor) and so far about 2 chapters of the book's 20 were translated. The first chapter and a fragment from the 19th are posted in PDF and DOC formats at my own website: http://www.bio-forum.net From a statistical point, the original version of the book has about 190,000 words; 1st translated chapter has about 18,000. The book is slated to be finished and emailed to the first 1000 contributors on October 1st, 2011; no other copies will be made available until January 1st, 2012.
The money will be used for the translation of the book (more translators will contribute in an interdisciplinary effort), and for purchasing an encription software to hinder piracy and distribute the book electronically.
The contributors (pledge-es) can also opt to have the chapters emailed to them as they are ready and suggest modifications for which they will be credited if accepted in the final version. Requests for contributions as translators will also be considered. This makes for a "semi-open project", for the completion of which I also thank you in advance. FS
