Dispatches from Photoville, New York

Update #33 · Jul 16, 2012 · comment

Photoville was a huge success. Sweaty, curly prints, lots of smiles and appreciation. Also, astounded-minds at the sights we showed in that little pocket of NYC over two weekends. The event was exactly as the organisers intended - accessible, non-elitist, fun, like a "county fair for photography."

Cruel and Unusual was mounted in two 40 foot containers on the Brooklyn waterfront. The skyscrapers in the background (of the above image) are those in Lower Manhattan.

PRESS

Bryan Formhals with some love:

"But the work is only part of the experience. On Saturday I attended two talks, fist Pete Brook led a panel with photographers Lori Waselchuk, Deborah Luster and Yana Payusova in which they discussed Cruel and Unusual, the exhibit focusing on incarceration curated by Pete and Hester Keijser. It was very illuminating and great to hear about the experience each photographer had working in the prisons."

And, Foto8 with some more:

Noorderlicht shows Pete Brook and Hester Keijser's "Cruel and Unusual" which deals with themes that Brook regularly explores on his Prison Photography website, including notes from his Prison Photography Road Trip; the double container exhibit brings together a large array of work that was driven by perhaps similar motivations, but which are realised in distinctively different and intimate ways.

Stella rains down some positive vibes:

"I am constantly, majorly impressed with Pete Brook and his devotion to the subject of incarceration in the US. Both the “Cruel & Unusual” container full of work by many different photographers in different prisons he curated with Noorderlicht, and the panel he did with Lori Waselchuk, Deborah Luster and Yana Payusova were unforgettable and extremely thought provoking. Exactly what you want from a panel and exhibit."

La Journal de la Photographie, on it, as ever.

A preview on TIME's Lightbox.

Yana gets some TIME eyeballs.

Featureshoot listed the Cruel and Unusual panel discussion as "inspiring."

Thanks to Hester and Noorderlicht oncemore for backing the exhibition and allowing PPOTR to roll into, fuse with it, confuse people of the where the boundaries lie!

Best, Pete.
