Update #5: I BELIEVE!

Posted on July 19, 2010

Like many people in the world I am a fan of Oprah Winfrey. I don't buy into everything that she promotes, but there is one idea that she promotes that I believe. It's the idea that what you attract is what you receive.

A few years ago, I put this vision board together. It's not complete, but it includes my hearts deepest desires. As you can see, my vision includes me writing, directing, loving, and traveling. Can you believe that today I am actually seeing part of the vision manifested. It didn't just happen because I imagined it. It happened because I stepped out of my comfort zone and took a risk. I opened my heart and declared to the world that this is who I am and this is what I want. In return, I received an abundance of blessings. Thank you all for your generosity! Most of all, thank you for believing and investing in me.

I am VERY excited about the projects I'll be developing this and next year because of this fundraiser! Here is a preview:
Sugar for Me - a short film
A documentary focusing on black men in Philadelphia
A continuation of my hair documentary
16th and Locust - a short film
I also have plans for one other documentary and two feature length films

I am looking forward to immersing myself in these projects.

Thank you again for your love!

Steph

BTW - one of the orange pieces of paper on my board says the following:
"Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

Truth!

I BELIEVE!

Update #4: Success Comes in Many Forms

Posted on July 15, 2010

This time last Thursday I was hustling, prepping food, getting last minute supplies, and trying to get everything I needed for the film premiere. It seemed like time skipped past Friday because Saturday came in a flash. The morning rushed into the afternoon and suddenly I realized, OMG, I'm having a film premiere! My first film premiere. The nerves immediately set in. I started to worry. Will people show? Will they enjoy the show? Will I have something to say?

7 pm rolled around. The room at Edgewater filled quickly. The spotlight was officially on me. The show began. Exit, Black Women: Coiled and Curled, and The March were all very well received. The audience asked questions and gave great feedback. One of the surprises of the night came from a group of women. They came to the premiere because of a email blast they received. I was excited to see that they were willing to take a risk on a new filmmaker.

By the end of the night, I was so excited to see that I exceeded my donation goal! Success isn't just monetary. Success is exceeding a goal or an expectation. I am grateful for the love and generosity of the people who came to the premiere!

We are truly entering the home stretch of the fundraiser. I am still hopeful that the goal will be reached.

Update #3: Just About 3 Weeks Left

Posted on July 1, 2010

I can't believe we are closing in on the last month of this project. Flyers have been distributed for my fundraising/film premiere event and I am EXCITED! This time last year I was planning with my director friend to shoot my first short film. We had the cast, locations, and a small crew locked down. The only thing we didn't have was money. Ultimately, it was money that stalled the project and left us a bit depressed. The desire was still there, we just had to take a step back and go with the original plan... which was to just shoot a film. We did. The March was born out of that initial experience with 16th and Locust. And now here I am, preparing for a fundraising party and the launch of my next project. All I can say is, I am blessed, and life is good!

As Friday approaches, please keep this project in mind. Donate!

Update #2: Shy Girl

Posted on June 24, 2010

I'm not a fan of the spotlight at all. So making this video for my kickstarter page was challenging. But as I settled into the process, I realized that when I am speaking about something I am very passionate about, the shy girl disappears. This fundraiser so far has taught me humility and to push as hard as possible when trying to reach a goal. My hope in doing this was to become a better communicator. So far, it's working.

The support for this project so far has been amazing! There is still plenty of time to donate. Don't wait until the last minute though.

Update #1: After Midnight

Posted on June 8, 2010

I clicked the button to start this project. My nerves kicked in for a quick second, but isn't that exactly what happens when you take a leap out into the unknown! Like India.Arie says, "Gotta step out on faith". I believe and expect extraordinary things to happen through Kickstarter. One thing I know for sure is life is as beautiful as you make it. This is a HUGE step forward! I'm excited and determined to make Sugar for Me! Thanks for joining this ride!

Stay tuned!
