Re-usable, Stainless Steel Drinking Straws. Made in the USA with US Stainless Steel. Be a Conscious Sucker!
It's just a straw after all, right? Riiiiiight.
The formation of The Maine Drinking Straw Company is an attempt to produce one commonly disposed-of product in a way that will improve our future on earth.
YOUR LAST STRAW
For most of us, the drinking straw is a disposable one-and-done. A simple tool that is both wonderful and daunting. Wonderful during use; daunting afterwards. It's the "afterwards" that inspired the creation of our Made in the USA with US Stainless Steel Drinking Straws.
Straws are great. They make life better. And yet I couldn't live with the fact that after the fleeting moments of lovely sippability, this wonderful, simple tool made its way unceremoniously to the trash.
Or the ocean. Or the beach.
This is a simple project of inspiration. It involves conscious sourcing and the trial of a unique prize structure call Bonus Karmic Fundraising. It's a project that will live or die with the interests of the crowd.
We will pursue producing the best stainless drinking straws around. These aren't just stainless tubes. We've considered the following:
- Optimum steel thickness;
- Edge rounding, polishing and de-burring,
- Best-practices for cleaning;
- A drinking guide to address any issues with drinking through a hard (vs. flexible) straw; and
- How we'll proceed to get these straws out to the world.
Future developments--which backers will have first access to--are soft drinking tips and storage packs (or as we difficultly like to say, strawage packs) to hold your straws.
Our goal is to get our straws into the world in a big way by forming wholesale relationships after the successful funding of this project. We would love to sell to environmentally conscious restaurants as well. And were not ruling out cafeterias either. Anyone have a contact at Google?
IF NOT FUNDED...
The world will have to wait for the Maine Drinking Straws. Is this an option for you? Can you live with yourself knowing that you had a chance to make a difference but you left it on table? ;-)
Life will move on. You simply won't be sucking better while it does.
For your consideration, for your backing, for your decision to use fewer disposable items when they aren't absolutely necessary.
Huge appreciation goes out to to Danielle and her inspiring blog. Thanks for letting us use your photos! Just as huge was the video production help from No Umbrella Media. If you haven't seen their projects, I highly recommend that you re-structure your day to check them out.
A pipe cleaner *may* work, but they are often thin and disposable. That's why I'll be providing a re-usable brush with the appropriate diameter to adequately scrub the straw.
I only have 2 prototype samples, neither of which is an accurate representation of the final product. Unfortunately, I won't be able to provide the perfect photos. Also, I'm not a CAD guy so I don't have a 3D drawing. All that said, here are the dimensions that I'm working with:
Straw Length: 8.000"
Wall Thickness: 0.016"
Outside Diameter: 0.250"
How are Maine Drinking Straws different from other, cheaper, stainless straws that are out on the market?
MATERIALS & PRODUCTION: For one, most stainless comes from China. It's super-inexpensive that way. I can't speak for all other straws, but this project would be significantly less expensive to produce if I didn't require that my stainless be produced in the US. Same goes for the production. I'll be working with a great New England company. MUCH less expensive to have the straws produced overseas. Likewise, US Made cleaning brush as well. So the strength of this aspect comes from whether you believe in having an increased direct support for the US economy. Clearly this project is on a tiny scale, but I believe that every bit helps.
DESIGN: I've chosen a starting diameter between a thin (regular) straw and a super-thick "smoothie-style" diameter (see previous FAQ). This will make the straw versatile for all types of beverages. Likewise, I've chosen a wall thickness that is thin enough to have a better mouth-feel over really thick stainless straws but still strong.
Depending on the success of the project, I may be able to offer some great add-ons like carrying cases and mouth-tips.
I am expecting (hoping) to achieve the $5k level of Bonus Karmic Fundraising, so I assumed that for every 1 shipment, there would actually be 2. I have no intention of making money off shipping, so if it ends up being less expensive because the project is only funded at the $3300 level, I will figure out a refund method.
