We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Funded! This project successfully raised its funding goal on November 9, 2012.

In Nov. 2010, Yidn recorded its 2nd and last CD, before half the band headed West. It's finally available, just in time for Hanukkah.

At the end of four years of klezmer music-making, Yidn recorded this album, A Band with a Past.  When we listened to the mixes months later, we were delighted to find that we managed to capture on this CD the kind of klezmer we always wanted to make--vibrant, traditional, yet unmistakably individual.

Boris, our recording engineer, talked to me about promoting the project.  "Remember," I told him, "we're not a band with a future; we're a band with a past."    When I thought about how we're  grounded in the klezmer tradition, "A Band with a Past" became the name of the CD.  Through this Kickstarter project, we hope to cover the costs of creating and duplicating the CD.

As a thank-you for considering supporting our project, please go to my website and download "Sirba," one of the tunes from the CD, and watch a video from a concert we gave the day after we recorded the album.

Yidn: Paul Wexler (clarinet in C), Iggie Tiemann (acoustic bass), Will Soll (mandolins, tenor banjo, guitar, *vocal) and Ben Schreiber (violin).    Recording produced by Boris Golynskiy.

Tunes:  1. A Nacht in Gan Eden  2. A Gleyzele Vayn  3. Oyfn Pripitchek*  4. Galician Sher  5. Gustiner Khosid   6. Sherele Tanz  7. Khosidl (Sha, Sha, der Shviger kommt)  8. Sirba  9. Tumba*  10. Drohobisher Khosid  11. Der Heiser   12. The Terk at Yale  13. Leybedik/ Vu Bist Du Geveyzen Fur Prohibish.  All tunes traditional except "Gustiner Khosid" by Paul Wexler.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The main risk associated with our project involves getting our CD to backers in a timely fashion. In managing this risk, it helps that the album itself is already recorded and mixed, and that the master CDs have already been created. As far as the artwork goes, we have received permission from NY photographer Todd Weinstein to use one of the pictures from his series "The Thirty-Six Unknown" for the CD cover; all that remains is to format the text for the cover and inserts. We are already in contact with NationWide Disc, who will be duplicating the CD. We've used them before for a couple of projects and found them trustworthy and reliable. We plan to give them the masters and the artwork even before the funding deadline. We believe we can get copies of the CD to backers by November 19.

Our biggest challenge is raising enough funds through Kickstarter. To draw attention to the project we will be using Facebook, email, contacts from Will and Paul's websites, publicity at several St. Louis area synagogues, and word of mouth. We also want to see if we can bring the band back together for a CD release concert here in St. Louis on December 16, so we need to find a venue and arrange for that as well.
