About this project

British solo harpist, Keziah Thomas is commissioning a brand new work for solo harp to be premiered in the Autumn of 2010 as part of contemporary harp project 'Crossing Waves'. The new work by Andy Scott, will be performed at The Forge in London on Sunday September 26th 2010 and Carnegie Hall in New York on Saturday October 16th 2010 alongside other works written by British and American composers in the past 50 years.

This project was fuelled by my recent move to New York City at the beginning of 2010. As a harpist, immersed in a city rich with cultural influences from all over the world, it set me thinking how I could use this opportunity to share new works for the harp from American culture and my own with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Crossing Waves is my perspective on the harp expressing musical developments and how it can play a continuing and important role in the 21st century.

As a young soloist, I am passionate about expanding the harp’s repertoire and hope that by continuing to regularly perform contemporary music, some of the music written in the past ten years might become standard repertoire for the generations of international harpists to come. I believe as one of only a handful of British solo harpists, it is my duty to the instrument to develop the repertoire and have commissioned a solo harp piece by British composer, Andy Scott.

In this kickstarter project, I am hoping to raise 50% of the commission fee for Andy Scott's new work. This total cost of the 7 minute work for harp is $4000 and my fundraising target is $2400.

Each person who contributes to this project will be acknowledged in the published score of Andy Scott's piece and also in the 'Crossing Waves' programmes.

Born in London in 1980, Keziah Thomas started learning the harp from the age of ten, gaining an ARCM diploma and solo debuts at the Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall whilst still at school. She completed her studies with Daphne Boden at the Royal College of Music in 2002 and was awarded the Douglas Whittaker, Jack Morrison and Marie Goossens Harp Prizes.

Since graduating, Keziah has achieved a busy career as a soloist and chamber musician appearing at major venues and festivals throughout the UK and abroad including a solo tour of Japan for Aoyama Harps, a series of recitals for the Worshipful Company of Musicians in London and performances at the 8th, 9th and 10th World Harp Congresses in Geneva, Dublin and Amsterdam. As well as regularly performing core harp repertoire, Keziah is also interested in new exploring new repertoire and premiered three new works for harp duo in a critically acclaimed recital for the Park Lane Group’s 2005 Young Artists Series at the Purcell Room. Keziah has recently commissioned British composer, Andy Scott to write a new work for solo harp to be premiered in the autumn of 2010.
Twice a string finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, Keziah won 2nd prize in the 2003 International Chamber Music Competition with Harp with her harp duo, Double Action, 1st prize in the 2003 London Harp Competition and, in May 2008, won the Camac Harp Competition, her prize including a debut recital in Paris in 2009.
