100 14" x 14" oil paintings of teenagers, each painted from life in a 4 hour session, accompanied by quotes on life from the models
"Portraits of Promise" - One Hundred Portraits of American Teenagers, is a series of oil portraits of teenagers painted from life. The models each posed for 4 hours. The paintings are done in a method known as “Alla Prima”, which is a direct, expressive painting style, and literally means “at once” in Italian. Alla prima paintings are completed in a single session, during which the artist tries to capture the feeling and psychology of the subject as well as an accurate likeness in a limited period of time. In these paintings, each completed "wet-on-wet" in a single session; the methods used are those I learned studying under Nelson Shanks at Studio Incamminati, the school he founded in Philadelphia. This series had its genesis in my desire to to paint portraits from life, and to explore different ways to paint expressively. I also to wanted do something different, something less formal than traditional portraiture, and to work with subjects who might not otherwise have their portraits painted. At a certain point, it became apparent that this project had become a sort of "historical document" by which the viewer could experience today's teenagers, not only through how these young people look, but also through their thoughts, feelings, aspirations and dreams, which are incorporated into the project. Each portrait is accompanied by quotes from a questionnaire the teenagers were asked to complete, in which they share their concerns and hopes for the future, as well as practical advice to other teenagers. The paintings, accompanied by the models' statements, will be exhbited under the title "Portraits of Promise: One Hundred Alla Prima Portraits of American Teenagers". I also plan to publish a book about my experience of this project, which will include photographs of the paintings and the model's statements about life, as well as my own thoughts about painting this series. I began the paintings in September, 2010, a week after my youngest child left for college, and completed 118 paintings by June, 2012. Painting this series helped me to process my feelings about my shifting role as parent, mother and wife, entering the next phase of my life without my children at home. Embracing the young people who posed in this series was a wonderful way to ease though this transition. They lifted my spirits, and sustained me through over 100 paintings. The funds raised here will be used to purchase frames in which the paintings will be exhibited. Should additional funds be raised, that money will be used to underwrite the costs of publishing the book of this project. This series of portraits has been a true labor of love.
