Update #6 "Portas da Cidade"

Update #6 · Aug 15, 2012 · 3 comments

Hey there,

After about a long week of working on a Portuguese Culture Poster, I think I finally have something I'm happy with.  This poster was probably the toughest one to create.  I had a bunch of ideas floating around.  I had thought about Portuguese bakeries, the Portuguese Feasts, and Portuguese food. Ultimately, I chose none of those.  I started thinking about Portuguese people coming to Fall River.  Fall River is one of the most populated Portuguese places in the USA.  Why do Portuguese people come here?

Then I came up with an idea.  Portuguese people come here to better their lives for their families.  Portuguese people have chosen Fall River as their new home for a better life.  So I wanted to create a poster that encapsulated that idea. I had this idea about a man holding a Portuguese flag, symbolizing his immigration to Fall River, holding the hand of a child holding an American flag, symbolizing her American citizenship.  Originally, I had an Azorean flag in the mans hand.  But I then switched it to the Portuguese flag, to avoid confusion.  I then wanted to have this poignant moment of the man looking at his child in reflection while gazing at the Portuguese Gates.

The Portuguese Gates have become an institution in Fall River.  They were built as a sign of solidarity to our sister city, Ponta Delgada, Azores.  It's a replica of the "Portas da Cidade" originally built in Ponta Delgada, Azores.  It was built to remind the many Portuguese people of the home they left, thousands of miles away, to better their lives here in Fall River, MA.

I really have to thank my Portuguese friend and fellow backer, Glenn Da Luz for stepping up as a model for this poster.  Check out the reference photo I used to make this poster come true!  I'm sure Glen won't be happy about sharing this image, but I can't thank him enough for helping me out!

Where do we go from here?  As of right now, I have 8 posters done.  I'm tweaking and reviewing, and will start the printing process.

There is one week to go on the kickstarter campaign, It's our final push!  Keep up the momentum!  Continue to share, like, tweet, email, and scream at the top of your lungs about this project. It's been a crazy fun ride.  The project was also featured in another news paper, The Fall River Spirit.  Check it out for an in-depth look into how this project started.

We've been receiving so much positive attention, and the City of Fall River has already been bustling about this project.  With your continued support we have done something positive for Fall River!

There are three weeks left until the art festival at the Narrow's Center.  Mark your Calendars for Sunday, September 9, 2012, 11am-8pm.  Check out live music, arts, food, and it's all free!

The next update I will do a comprehensive look into the posters, and tell the stories on how they all came into existence!

      Drew,
Have to say, everything you've done with this project has proven your artistic skills, your thoughtfulness and good judgement about what to depict and how to manage this project. You've depicted Fall River, the city of "hills, mills and pork pies" (as my dad used to say) in a very positive way. BTW: Something you may have already considered, but I'd bet that the alumni associations of the high schools and colleges in the area would love to offer these to their former students. Keep up the great work.
      Your cousin, Mark Caron

Beautiful, Drew. I love the symbolism. But now for a challenge. How to portray the blending of cultures that Fall River represents, e.g. Portuguese and French Canadian. Not to mention Iriish, Polish, Lebanese, etc.
