About this project
The Chrysalis is an art sculpture being built for Burning Man, 2011. The Chrysalis is a 30 ft. by 10 ft. cocoon that rotates 360 degrees. The inside of the cocoon will be covered in fuzzy fabric and lit at night; ideal for resting and socializing. The outside of the Chrysalis will be well lit at night, have climbing holds along the sides and a platform on the top. The idea is that the participants can climb inside and outside the Chrysalis to explore the dimensions of time and space.We feel this project represents this years theme of Rights of Passage. The inspiration for the sculpture is the butterfly chrysalis. The chrysalis is a symbol of change and transformation for the butterfly. The sculpture allows for participants to feel the way the butterfly does. It does this by inviting the participant to enter the chrysalis from one place, yet since the sculpture rotates, they don't know what direction they will be pointing when they exit. Life is full of large and small passages, and often the most powerful times are during transition.A large portion of our community has come together to build this project and we plan to have it completed by Monday, August 29th.
The chrysalis is a 30 foot long by 7 foot diameter “cocoon” shaped tube. This tube will be placed upon a pivot point towards one end of the tube to allow the cocoon to pivot into the wind, participants will also be able to push the cocoon around 360 degrees. On the outside of the cocoon participants will be able to scale the walls using climbing blocks and cargo net. On top of the cocoon will be a plexiglass platform with lights below for for people to stand upon and site see into the playa. Inside of the cocoon participants will be able to relax in a playful fuzzy atmosphere. At night the cocoon will be lit using low energy LED with power supplied by deep cycle batteries charged with solar.

Chrysalis is an art project from the Mallards, an extremely good looking group of folks who camp and play together at Burning Man and in life!!!! This is our first collaborative group art project and, well were just going to make more and more. Thank you for your support!!!!!!!!!!
