About this project

The Breaking Up With ED project was conceived in 2011, to benefit the National Eating Disorders Association (or NEDA.)  Its purpose is to educate the public about the reality of eating disorders and the disordered thinking that goes along with them. How they can strike anyone. The forms ED can take.  How far it has spread into the modern psyche without us even realizing it.  And how to strike back.

Eating disorder survivors, their friends and families, and educators are being interviewed.  Men, women, girls, boys, everyone and anyone who has had a brush with ED is talking and sharing their stories.  These interviews will be transformed into monologues, and the monologues woven together to one long ensemble piece, with several actors playing multiple roles, each portraying a different face of ED.  The project will be performed this upcoming summer in the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, D.C.

All profits from this project will be donated to NEDA to support their ongoing work in outreach and education for eating disorder awareness.

And thanks to Nick Torres for use of his song "Tsunami."

I'm a graduate of the UVA theatre program, and the Conservatory at Shakespeare & Company. I love working in every area of theatre, backstage and onstage, and directing is a particular favorite.

I conceived the Breaking Up With ED Project after my first NEDA walk in November 2011. I'm in recovery for an eating disorder, and that walk was the first time I publicly came out about my illness. I was amazed at all the incredible people I met at that walk, and I was really moved by two particular speakers who worked for NEDA, Robbie Munn and Kathleen MacDonald. They spoke of the difficulties NEDA has in funding and in reaching out to as many people as they need to. I found myself really wishing there was a way that I could help NEDA in my own way; having worked in theatre for so long, I started wondering if maybe there was a way to combine my particular skills with my desire to help get the word out there about eating disorders.

Thus, the Breaking Up With ED project was born. And right now I'm getting to meet some of the most amazing and strongest people I've ever known, and I can't wait to share their stories.
