A exhibition of photographs of Newburgh, NY; the overlooked and ignored city on the Hudson River, yet where beauty and hope remain.
In September my book of photographs entitled Newburgh: Portrait of a City is scheduled to be published by W. W. Norton. To coincide with the publication we are planning an outdoor exhibition of mural size prints, 4ft by 6ft, which will be displayed on the side of the Ritz Theater in the heart of downtown Newburgh. The exhibition will run from September through October 2012.

Newburgh is the historic city on the Hudson River with more than 55% African American population in its downtown area. Since the mid-1950s, when urban renewal began and then quickly failed, the city has been overlooked and ignored. For the past fifteen years I have been taking portraits of those who came my way as I walked around, together with the fine Victorian architecture that remains. Please click here to view more Newburgh photographs.
The Ritz Theater is an affiliate of Safe Harbors of the Hudson, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts. They are collaborating with the exhibition.
The outdoor display of the photographs will allow all the citizens of Newburgh free and constant access to them. The display will be organized by the Ann Street Gallery, also an affiliate of Safe Harbors of the Hudson. The contributions that I am asking for will be used to pay for the prints, mounting and publicizing the show. See below for the budget:
- Manufacture of prints and mounting 9,360
- Delivery 500
- Installation 3,000
- Design, marketing, promotion 1,000
- TOTAL $13,860
Revenue from the sale of prints will be given to a Newburgh charity.
