About this project
Thank you SO much for visiting the "Horse Shoes" Kickstarter page! Check out our cool rewards on the right. We think you'll like what we have to offer.....
A quick note: if you pledge to this campaign and I am not successful, your money will never leave your pocket. If I am successful, Amazon will collect the pledge soon after the campaign ends. There was some confusion among visitors to this page about what happens to their money but it never leaves you unless I raise all the money!
The feature-length documentary "Horse Shoes" follows a small group of children as they are each paired with a rescued mustang or a retired show horse for the purpose of rebuilding their lives. Despite their youth, these kids have had more than their share of hard knocks. From terminal illness in their family to growing up in the tough inner city of "Sin City", all of them are in need of a miracle. This movie documents some of the extraordinary stories of transformation which are taking place on the outskirts of Las Vegas.
I came to the attention of this program a year ago when I was asked to videotape some of the sessions the kids were having with the horses. It took a few months for the lightbulb to go off but it finally registered that the incredible moments of growth and discovery we were witnessing would make an exceptional documentary. Highlighting the journey of the children are the stories of the mentors themselves, a group of passionate people who have some amazing stories of their own. I also want to include, as a backdrop, the story of an American living legend.... the wild mustang.
Most documentarians will tell you that the story chooses them rather than the other way around. That was the case for me and I intend to see it through until its completion. Once complete, I'm going to do what it takes to find a wide audience for the movie. I'll begin by sending it in to major festivals and, depending on the outcome of the festival circuit, I'll then turn my attention to other distribution options.
A great deal of the movie has already been videotaped and rough cutting has begun but I still need to shoot most of the on-camera interviews plus, a new class begins in October and I'd love to have more material to work with. I am raising $14,500: this is the minimum amount I need to finish the film. The budget will go to four areas: Kickstarter and Amazon Payments will keep roughly 10% for providing the platform which allows me to do this; second, a third of the budget will go towards the cost of the additional shooting; another third will go towards post-production (editing and mixing); and finally, a brilliant, up-and-coming film composer, based on the sneak peek you watched above, agreed to compose the musical score and conduct it with a small orchestra for the additional third of the budget.
