About this project

Attitude is everything, they say.

We think it is more important than that. Join acclaimed artist Barb Choit and Dumbo Arts Center in cultivating the ideal collection of in-your-face, personality-enhancing, attitude-defining products for a once in a lifetime event at the NADA Miami Art Fair.

DAC will be presenting Choit's superlative new project I Heart My Attitude Collection: The Store at the New Art Dealer's Alliance art fair in Miami Beach from December 1 - December 4, 2011. We were given this amazing opportunity to present at this year's fair. However, it happened outside of our planned budgeting, so we are turning to you, our fans, friends and well-wishers to make this project a reality. Please help us do it!

I Heart My Attitude Collection: The Store deals with mass-produced objects that have been specifically merchandised to reflect the “attitude” of their owners. We will be converting a standard art fair display booth into a boutique-like store in which we sell objects such as t-shirts, tote bags, mugs and key chains that are printed with such classic phrases as:

  • “Lithuanian with an Attitude"
  • “If you don’t like my Brooklyn attitude, quit talking to me,"
  • and "I don't have an attitude problem, you have a being an asshole problem."
Drawing from her past installation projects that have involved curating collections of mass produced objects, then presenting these collections as art works, Choit has obtained these "attitude" related products primarily from thrift stores, retail t-shirt outlets, and auction website www.ebay.com. The conversion of the art fair booth into a boutique will allow the artist's carefully cultivated Attitude Collection to be on display in its entirety. This sets the collection up for a reappraisal of the individual's objects own particular goals on an aesthetic basis. What? By showing these pop-culture items that brazenly declare how bad-ass the potential owner is, we determine if they do indeed seem bad-ass. Once so appraised, Choit and DAC offer you the chance to walk home with your own carefully selected attitude defining item, now a culturally important piece of fine art!

Plus, there's more! Choit will produce a limited edition of "I Heart My Attitude Problem" artworks to be available only at the fair. These items include a fill-in-the-blank occupation "_____ with an attitude " tote bag and an artist-personalized "I Don't Have an Attitude Problem, You Have a Perception Problem" print. These works position the artist, the venue and the audience squarely in the midst of the struggle to maintain authenticity and individuality in the ever-increasingly homogenized mass-culture marketplace.

By supporting our Kickstarter campaign, you will help us to realize this brash, dashing new work. Your contribution will enable us to continue to expand The Collection of attitude-defining goods, produce the very limited edition artworks, and realize our booth at NADA Miami in high style. Your support will also enable us to get to Miami and procure lodging. We simply can't do it without you. In return, you will be entitled to works only available to our Kickstarter supportors, incredibly great deals on the artworks being produced for the fair, and an indelible aura of the artist's attitude problem.

Since Dumbo Arts Center is a not-for-profit organization, your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extant allowable by tax laws. After we subtract the value of the goodies you choose to receive, of course.

Be part of it today. Exact change, please.

  • It has bean a lean year for DAC, with many changes and transitions. We've been working on a very minimal budget that didn't have a lot of wiggle room. We were recently offered the chance to bring a project to NADA Miami Beach. At the same time, Barb Choit shared her I Heart My Attitude Problem: The Collection project with us. It was a natural fit to bring this great project to NADA. We just need to fund it...

  • Not at all! Part of point I Heart My Attitude Problem: The Store is to look at how we define ourselves, what options we have for such definitions and the over-bearing role mass-produced consumer culture plays in this definition. Some people define themselves with a t-shirt emphatically stating their ethnically-derived attitude, others do it with a Rothko over the mantel. We want to get them in the same room.

  • The booth at NADA Miami Beach, airfare and accommodations, production materials like display racks and canvas and some promo materials. Plus, we will be expanding the already large collection.

  • As a contemporary art venue who's mission is to introduce emerging artists to the world, we couldn't think of a better place to do this at than one of the most popular art fairs in the world. More exposure for DAC means more exposure for the artists we represent. It is a global world, baby!
