design is everywhere. consider your pants, your park, your phone, your fonts. we ask: what is design, and why does it matter ?
I worked for many years in the creative side of TV news production, and for the past six, have been running a brand video company that, to my delight, has been able to focus on design.
Architecture, planning, landscape, industrial design, graphic arts, product design, interior design, sustainable design .. my company has produced a lot of work around these areas.
The more I worked around design, the more I wanted to get into design. And the more designers I talked to, the more I realized that design is a fascinating, all-encompassing movement that blankets the earth -- on a micro level, and a macro level.
I looked around, and saw the millions of creative and interesting jobs that design provides. I saw -- and began to grasp -- how design was changing how people worked and lived.
And notably, I saw that design is the source of clean, creative, intelligent jobs that everyone wants .. and wants for their kids.
But mostly, I was fascinated by the art of making something so complicated look so elegant and simple.
As a journalist, film-maker and producer, I like to tell -- and produce -- interesting stories. I like to explore how things work, and I love backstory.
I like to take the camera backstage, I like to lift up the hood of the car, and I like to talk to people about how and why they do what they do.
I take interviewing very seriously. Or not -- I disarm people when I put them on camera, but ultimately I want to walk away with insight and perspective and anecdotes a hundred different journalists and film-makers couldn't get ... or forgot to ask.
I think my three kids should embrace the design world as a career. I think everyone's kids should. But if the kids are like me, no quite painted a Big Picture of what design is ... or the millions of fascinating ways you can participate in design, succeed at design, make money at design ... solve problems and rock the world.
An ipad is great design; so is Helvetica, so is a toothbrush.
DesignCode will code will take it apart and bring it together, week after week. We will answer the question: What is Design, and Why Does it Matter ?
This will become a resource. This will become a celebration. This will become an encyclopedia. This will become a tool. For designers. For the media. For students. For lay people. For creative people. Especially for creative people. For retailers and buyers. For educators and kids.
We are seeking $80,000.
This funds a year's worth of production, and pays the salary of a business development person. That development person is encouraged to turn their one year assignment into a permanent position. I'll produce the content, the development person will organize the shooting and production schedule, manage the website and video flow, handle marketing and promotion, seek sponsors and advertisers, build SEO, syndicate the product and generally: ensure that this series is self-sustaining in one year.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We create content, so challenges that are typical to designers and manufacturers don't usually afflict us. Parts, inventory, engineering ... we don't get stuck on that.
How we professionally handle adversity and manage any setbacks is another key to our success. Hundreds of hours of live production on network television news pretty much steels you for anything. No matter what we encounter, poise and experience are what we fall back on to handle difficulties.
We've spent the past seven years shooting design, and interviewing designers. We don't pretend to know design better than anyone, but we know the territory, and we know the questions to ask. Murphy's law says you'll encounter obstacles during production -- and we know what to do. What we don't do is encounter, tolerate or recognize failure.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
