Thank you for visiting my most recent Kickstarter project. For this project, I am working on creating new beads, wall décor and jewelry utilizing a laser and wood.
Egyptian Themed Items
I decided to work with Egyptian themed items because I have a few friends and family members that were interested in Egyptian styles. One of the challenges with this particular theme is that the laser is not particularly friendly to exceptionally detailed work (it tends to light on fire). I worked out a few patterns that turned out fairly decent and one that I personally think looks wonderful (King Tut).
What are these things?
For lack of a better term, I call the smaller items “beads” and the bigger items “décor”. Realistically, being that they are wood, they can be just about anything you want. You can get them unfinished (straight off the laser) to be finished in any method you choose, or you can get them finished in select sizes (with a non-toxic finish I use on my jewelry). I also have listed the option for final jewelry pieces.
How can I finish them?
The good news is that they are wood items, so theoretically…any type of wood stain and finish should work on them. The wood is MDF (recycled wood), and in our experience, it stains quite well. The non-toxic finish we use on jewelry made from MDF has also worked quite well. As a note, even clear finishes tend to slightly darken the final product.
What are some of their uses?
For the smaller items that we call beads, we do use them as beads for jewelry items (earrings and pendants mostly as you will see from the examples). Your imagination and the type of adhesive you use is the limit (when all else fails, we use epoxy to secure the wood items to other objects). Some ideas or uses that we have tried: gluing the smaller beads to a wooden picture frame (you can even stain each bead a different color to give it even more personality); using either the smaller beads or even the décor size as accents on door frames or window frames; as ornaments either seasonally or year-round; or even as wall décor or home accents (especially the 6” and larger King Tut).
Why the project?
As with my last project, in order to keep the price of the items down, I need to cut these all at once instead of one at a time. I get a pretty good deal on materials and laser time, but this time instead of cutting it myself- I need to pay to also have the laser owner cut it for me because I am pregnant (and it’s just better to be safe than sorry when working with potential fumes from the laser). While I still get a great deal (yep, I’ve checked around), the time each one of these items takes to engrave/cut is quite a bit longer because of the detail of the items. I anticipate needing to reach the $300 mark to make this happen.
Can’t I get these anywhere?
If they steal my patterns…maybe. While many of these are inspired by images (clearly, they are not original ideas), I spend quite a long time fine-tuning the design and making it able to be cut with a laser on wood. Especially with the King Tut, there are not many laser owners or operators that will take the time to fine-tune the details of these images- making them rather unique for a laser item!
Last final notes
These items are cut from 1/8" thick MDF (recycled wood). The heights are approximately 1", 2", 3" and 4". The width for each item may vary slightly with the final product, so I'm just going to say "proportionate" for now.
