Featuring Garrison Fewell, John Tchicai, Roy Campbell Jr., Steve Swell, Dmitry Ishenko, Reggie Nicholson. 1/3/12 Brooklyn, NY
The Variable Density Sound Orchestra in New York is a new recording project taking place on January 3rd, 2012 in Brooklyn NY. I am asking for your involvement to help cover expenses for the recording studio, mixing, production, distribution and promotion of the CD. Your contributions will also support the exceptional artists involved in this project. The release date is September 2012.
Variable Density Sound Orchestra: Guitarist Garrison Fewell founded the VDSO in 2008 and released two recordings on the Creative Nation Music label. As the name implies, the VDSO is not a fixed group, but an actively changing and growing collective of improvising musicians and composers from around the world. With varied nationalities, ethnic and gender backgrounds, the VDSO conducts improvisational dialogues that transcend boundaries and promote cultural diversity in creative music.
We hope to get you involved in the creation of this recording! Thanks to the contributions of dedicated individuals like yourselves, creative music continues to thrive. Members of the Variable Density Sound Orchestra are also involved in social justice issues, bringing attention to the importance of culture in today's society through creativity and improvisation.
Members of the VDSO in New York: Garrison Fewell, guitar / John Tchicai, tenor saxophone / Roy Campbell Jr., trumpet / Steve Swell, trombone / Dmitry Ishenko, bass / Regiie Nicholson, drums
Additional information about the artists: Garrison Fewell and John Tchicai have been playing and recording together since 2003, from their Soul Note CD, "Big Chief Dreaming" and Boxholder's "Good Night Songs" to "One Long Minute" on Nubop Records and "Ascension Unending," Tchicai's current sextet that performed recently at George Wein's Care Fusion Festival and the Vision Festival in NYC. Roy Campbell Jr., Steve Swell and Dmitry Ishenko are current VDSO members and have recorded on previous VDSO CDs.
Afro Danish tenor saxophonist John Tchicai plays flute, bass clarinet and alto sax equally well. While living in New York in mid-1960's, Tchicai contributed to many renowned free jazz groups. He is a founding member of the New York Art Quartet and Quintet, and has recorded with Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Cecil Taylor, and with John Coltrane on his 1965 Impulse lp, "Ascension." He is the recipient of a lifetime grant from the Danish Ministry of Culture.
Trumpeter Roy Campbell Jr. leads his own ensembles, "The Pyramid Trio" and "Other Dimensions in Music," and has scored music for documentaries "The Selling of Harlem" and "Survival in New York." Roy has performed with William Parker, Billy Bang, Jemeel Moondoc, Charles Tyler, Sun Ra, David Murray, Rashied Ali, Cecil Taylor and many others. Roy appears on all previous VDSO recordings.
Trombonist Steve Swell has over 30 CDs as a leader and recorded with Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, Anthony Braxton, Jemeel Moondoc, Sabir Mateen, and many others and has been nominated for best trombonist by Downbeat Magazine. Steve appears on the VDSO recording, "Sound Particle 47." Together, Swell and Fewell are 2/3rds of "The Serious Trio" with soprano saxophonist Andrew Raffo Dewar.
Bassist Dmitry Ishenko, originally from Russia, is now residing and working in Brooklyn, NY. While living in Boston, Dmitry played on the very last concerts with Steve Lacy. Dmitry also appears on the VDSO recording, "Sound Particle 47," and is a member of John Tchicai's "Ascension Unending."
Chicago drummer Reggie Nicholson is a member since 1979 of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and has performed with Don Pullen, Billy Bang, Butch Morris, Hamiet Bluiet, Myra Melford, Amina Claudine Meyers, Wilber Morris, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill and Roy Campbell.
