Rise and Shine was the result of Jay's friends wanting to get his story out. 6 months before the 2010 World Cup, Ranko and Nick approached Jay with the idea of documenting his journey. Ranko and Jay had played college soccer together in Chicago and Jay obliged. Neither had any formal film experience (Nick is an attorney and Ranko an acupuncturist) but their love for soccer and their determination to have Jay's story told made the decision easy. However, one week before the film was set to begin shooting the director notified them that he was unable to direct to project due to family issues.
The pair had a decision to make - put an end to the project or give it a go. Juggling their day jobs, draining their savings, maxing their credit cards (and borrowing the rest) the two set out on a year-long journey that culminated in a 92-minute film, one they hope will inspire and entertain many with its message of hope and self-determination. With the help of a fresh out of college (and extremely talented) Cinematographer named Zach Salsman (www.zachsalsman.com), the movie was completed. It is amazing what the power of the mind, technology, and a positive attitude can do. It's also amazing the two haven't killed each other in the process.
For more on Ranko's unique story please read this UK Guardian article:

Walter, the Blu Rays were sent today domestically. International will be sent early next week, just need to fill all the customs forms out. Thanks so much for your patience and support!
Hey guys, I'm wondering about the status of the BD. Any ETA on that?
OOPS I guess I meant DVD... not easy to follow all this new technology...
I still do not have a CD? where is it???
My husband and I watched the movie last night. LOVED IT! Congrats - I'm so pleased I was (a very small) part of it.
Just received the DVD. Great job guys. Solid interviews. Totally worth the wait.
Thanks so much Ruth!!
WOW received and watched it today fantastic living in Watford and a fan of WFC the filming in this area was so familiar and bought back so many memories
WELL DONE ALL
David, we just provided an update - let me know if for some reason you didn't get it. Want to make sure everyone is staying informed. We are approximately 2 months away from getting everything out, working really hard on editing which is coming along really well. Doing our best to get you the best film possible (as well as t-shirts, etc). It is quite a process but coming along very well. Thanks for your patience
Hi All,
Any news on the DVD, T shirt etc? I guess this will probably be a while away but any update you have would be great. Thanks v much, David

Cannot see where to order a DVD of this project.
I'm either blind or it is hidden really well.
I went to http://kck.st/l3xflS but cannot see it.
Can you please advise?
In before it's too late! American, but I know soccer more than any other sport in this country by a mile. Anything to help out the sport and make myself a little more normal later in life by promoting this sport to make it what it should be. Thank you Nick, Ranko, and of course Jay's determination for making this DVD possible in the first place. Go soccer, Go US of A!
I am glad to have contributed to this great story. Having playing at UIC with Jay for a very short time, to know his story, his journey, and his dream, makes this inspiring film one for every young soccer player to see. Congrats to all who were tied into making this film! (Just curious on how and when the DVD's will be released and delivered) Looking forward to seeing it!!!!!!
What an amazing accomplishment guys! A HUGE Congrats. As someone who has seen projects succeed and fail on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and other crowdsourcing sites (not to mention a huge soccer fan), I have NEVER seen a project run this well, with this much support and momentum. And most projects struggle to raise even a couple thousand! You guys had a huge goal in mind, but never for a second waivered in believing that this project would come to fruition. A fantastic accomplishment! Congrats to all!
Will do Chris! What a day that was, I am sure you guys still remember it like yesterday! Thanks so much
Jay - thank you as well, that is massive! It says so much that so many people are rallying around the story.
Carrie - your words ring very true! I really hope it reaches a worldwide audience, we have come further than we expected so why stop now?!
Congratulations on making the target.
Jay is a fantastic guy and during his time at Watford became a real Hero for our daughter Emma. He always took time to speak to us and have photo's taken. It seems like only yesterday that great day in Cardiff. Emma had her wheelchair decorated especially for the occasion with JAY, JAY, USA & Stars & Stripes. Can't wait to see the film please pass on our regards to Jay thanks, Chris, Shani & Emma
Had to wait for a couple of paydays, but I was damn excited to throw $500 behind this project!!! I'm unbelievably happy you guys are telling Jay Demerit's story, but I'm even more excited you were able to raise the $$ you needed to get it out to the masses! I can't wait to see it.
I see many soccer fans, coaches, players here. I am a former competitive springboard and platform diver, and after watching the trailer I was in. I think this film will reach a worldwide audience, no matter what sport, because anyone who has tried to do something very difficult, or almost impossible, can relate to the long road of hopes, fears, doubts, disappointments, fears, and tiny steps of victory getting there.
Congrats, boys!!! Thrilled that you made it over the top, and damn proud to have played a small part in helping it happen!
YESSSS
YES!! My girlfriend has a nephew who is only 13 and had already been offered to start a training program to play soccer in the olympics when he's 16. I'm getting the perfect birthday present for him now in a DVDof one of the greatest stories ever told relating to soccer.
Made my pledge just as it was rising past the 100% mark. Could not be more proud to be a soccer fan in this country. Always try to support our national team in whatever they do, have always been a US Soccer Official Supporter, and now proud to be an extremely small part of what is a huge accomplishment. Congrats Jay, can not wait to see it!
As a high school soccer coach who always trys to teach/encourage my players to work hard and follow their dream this is going to be a great testimonial to show them. The story in this movie as well as it's funding are great example of the American spirit. Jay's story is one of the greatest sports stories I have ever heard. Great Job Guys!
This is so amazing! I can't believe $215,000. I can't wait to get the DVD. What plans are there for the movie in the future? Film festivals?
Great job guys!!
Congratulations, what a novel way to fund a project . The only downside - that FIFA and EPL wanted such exorbitant amounts for the rights to footage. This is an American story - and those organization should realize that a movie like this only serves to promote the sport in the USA. They should have given the rights for free
Thanks so much Ralph and everyone else! We all deserve praise for getting Jay's story out. More to come!!!
Amazing. It became personal to get this project funded. I posted the link or shared the link on dozens of media outlets facebook pages, soccer blogs over the last couple of days. It will be very satisfying to see it on the big screen. Congratulations to Nick, Ranko, Jay and everyone on here.
Congrats from a lifelong Hornets fan! Can't wait to see the film.
WOO-HOO!!!
AMAZING! This is so thrilling! Congrats. Can't wait to see this film :)
Well done guys! Congrats!
CONGRATS!!!!!!!
Congrats, Nick and Ranko! I created this quickly, just to capture the moment:

Unbelievable, you guys did it! Great job everyone. We cannot wait to see it. JD is an inspiration to all of us U.S. soccer players and fans and my three boys are excited that they were part of this.
Check mate boys. Kicked in the last 350.00
And damn happy to see the movie funded.
Marc & Connor
WoooooHooooo!!! It funded!!!
hey, so your baby's about to be funded. :) and then some. how's that feel? lol
This is how you get it to the main stream:
Hollywood International Film Festival, October 20 to 24, 2011
http://www.hollywoodawards.com/festival.html
Entering it into this film festival will
1) have the support of the great soccer town of Los Angeles
2) show it to the players in Hollywood who might want to distribute it
Not as big a name as Sundance, maybe, but a lot more practical if you think about it. Worked for Craig Brewer (Poor & Hungry, Hustle & Flow, Blake Snake Moan, Upcoming Footloose movie and Tarzan movie project after that)
So close, Jay. I know it will be a success. Hello from Pete's sister! Hope you are well.
Just upped my pledge $25 more dollars. Inspired from last night's screening in San Antonio with the @Crocketteers.
If everyone pledges 2 more dollars we are there!!!!!!!!! Do it! I just raised mine. I know times are tough but some lessons in life are worth more than any sum of money. I can't think of anything we need more to inspire hope and faith than a story like this.
Even when the total is reached, keep spreading the word and raising the total. These guys deserve to recoupe some money for their hard-earned efforts. I'm a video producer. I know the kind of heart and soul and 150% effort that it takes to tell a great story. Ranko, how long will your page be open before it's closed up?
I know what is going to happen - in about 7 or 8 years the US will have a true soccer 'STAR", that player will be asked one day how he got to this spot in his career. He will say "I watched a movie about a guy who never lost sight of his goals, it inspired me to reach for mine every day". This will be that movie!!!!!
You're going to do it! Congratulations!
My two kids had put together their allowance money a few days back to help back this project and I just doubled with my own contribution. This is going to happen. I have been posting links and updates all over facebook, soccer blogs and anything to do with sports or soccer.
Less than $5,000 to go. It's remarkable how much money has been pledged in the last few days. This shows how passionate the soccer community is in this country. Nick and Ranko, you should be proud of what you've done. You made a comment on how to get this to the mainstream audience. HBO has done a good job with showing sports documentaries and ESPN has always has done a good job with their 30 for 30 series. Of course they usually produce it themselves and I wouldn't want them to take over things when you guys have worked so hard. Of course lets finish this.
Raised my pledge to hopefully help put the project over today. Good luck!
Today is the day! I feel it ! We are getting it done before tonight!! Thanks for letting me help. Having this to focus on has made my health troubles seem a little less scary. Next project for me is beating this stuff and rebuilding my strength so I can get back to chasing my dream!!
Thanks s much Brian! We appreciate it and it really is a testament to Jay and his story! Great to see everyone coming together and rallying around it.
