Three young farmers risk land and friendship to stand up to the USDA. An experiential film about living a life of self reliance.
We reached our goal!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE SO MUCH!
We are beyond thrilled to have everyone's financial support, but what's most important to us is that this film gets out to as many people as possible. We are setting a new goal of 500 backers! Please continue to share BOONE over the final hours of our campaign!!!
What happens when we align our work with our beliefs? How does a lifestyle dictated by the seasons change who we become?
We have spent two years filming over 500 hours of footage on a small goat farm in Southern Oregon, documenting three young farmers operate a small dairy and then stand up to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's unfair small farm regulations.
BOONE is an experiential film; there are no interviews with agricultural experts or theorists. While the footage shows the individual and collective consequences of taking responsibility for our food, the larger themes of the documentary are about assigning meaning to our actions in any field. BOONE is an homage to the liberation within great personal risk.
Dana: A former teacher in Oakland, Dana felt she was upholding an educational system that was not cultivating creativity amongst children. She left behind a successful community garden to move to the farm and strengthen her personal and political beliefs while redefining her place as a woman and an educator.
Zac: Unfulfilled while teaching permaculture and running the community garden with Dana in Oakland, Zac moves to the farm to actualize a vision of growing organic food specifically for people who can't afford it. Not as an act of charity, but as a basic human right.
Mookie: After spending a decade confronting what he believes are unjust practices by the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Mookie discovers creative ways of resistance on his farm and questions whether his ambitions for political and social change might be better served through alternative channels than agriculture.
WHERE WE ARE
In 2012 BOONE was chosen as 1 of 8 films accepted into the highly competitive Film Independent Documentary Film Lab. We spent two months in L.A. working with mentors and fellow documentary filmmakers. This reaffirmed that our countless hours and dedication to our vision for this film were being supported by the documentary film community.
It's all about the editing! Currently, we are in the process of editing 500 hours of footage into a feature length documentary. Viewing this amount of footage is a huge task and we want to take the time to do it right. This is why we need your support. In order to do this, we have dedicated the next year to working solely on BOONE.
WHAT WE NEED
We need to raise $30,000 in order to complete a rough cut for the film. In order for the rough cut to be made, footage needs to be transcribed and logged and countless hours need to be spent watching and assembling. More money will need to be raised to complete BOONE, but your contribution will help us complete this crucial step.
Creating momentum upfront is key to reach our funding goal, so please donate early! If you cannot donate money, please help in other ways.
During the coming weeks, we would like to share clips and excerpts with you and hear your thoughts. We’ll also be letting you know about friends and colleagues who are putting out great documentary work.
Thank you in advance. We are grateful for your attention and interest!

We are really excited to offer a signed copy of Forest Defenders: The Confrontational American Landscape published by powerHouse books for pledges of $95 and up! This 11x11 monograph by Director Christopher LaMarca inspired the making of BOONE.
Over the course of five years a dedicated group of activists took it upon themselves to defend some of the last truly wild places in North America from being logged. The book delves into the lives of these extremely dedicated individuals, loggers and law enforcement as they confront one another in the backcountry of Southern Oregon.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Funding a documentary is a huge challenge from financing shooting to post production and distribution. Budget constraints and unexpected delays can add to these challenges.
We took the risk of dedicating over two years to BOONE as well as self funding the entire project. Now that we have perspective on how immense the amount of footage is, one of our big challenges is that the editing process may take longer than a year. Watching and editing 500 hours of footage is a daunting task, but these funds make the difference of being able to fully commit all of our energy into the project. We are prepared to put in as much time needed to finish BOONE.
Our other big challenge is raising the additional amount of funds for completion and navigating distribution. Once we have a rough cut we will be in a great position to explore alternate options.
Many of our challenges are up to us- Making a film that resonates while staying true to our vision and communicating that with an audience.
