A digital lens on illustration, its roots and derivative forms. We decode and honor the 'secret sauce' inspiring creative expression.
“The Illustrators Journal” (IJ) was born via a conversation between two friends. It began as a blog, and companion twitter account @TIjournal, followed by a one-page newsletter, and shortly thereafter an online digital magazine which just witnessed the publication of its 4th quarterly edition.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Hello and welcome Kickstarter friends
“The Illustrators Journal” aka @TIJournal (TIJ) started as a one-page newsletter and has developed into a go-to blog and quarterly digital magazine. Our fast yet steady increase in readership, site comments and likes tell us we’ve tapped into a creative pulse. Since the beginning of 2012 TIJ unique visits have increased over 425%! We publish stories about artists regardless of their age or era with the view that the more we know about them, and their creative inspiration, the better able we are to frame both meaning and purpose of their and perhaps our own lives. We engage our readers on projects as they unfold, and cover issues that impact artists, their lifestyles and business pursuits, if any. We are speaking to a global audience in the hopes that through art we can have greater understanding of each other. We celebrate the arts because our experience suggests that art for mankind is a universal language, and the evidence supports that culture’s embracing the arts typically manifest a higher performing and more humanistically centric society.
FAQ - You will not be charged and we will not receive any of the money pledged if we do not reach our minimum goal of $30,000!
How the Journal started
About a year ago I launched a weekly newsletter campaign primarily to share insights, both offer and receive creative inspiration while also marketing my work. I called it 'Illustrators Journal' and included portfolio illustration pieces, stories and quotes about illustrators and artists. It seemed a reasonable medium to promote my work. The decision to launch and distribute a digital magazine came soon thereafter. It was a more ambitious effort to create a publication that would inspire and celebrate the world of illustration while offering compelling information of interest to the broader art community. Within months of the initial launch of the magazine and blog we started to experience rapid growth in traffic to the site and to the online publication. In the first five months of 2012 we have had over 35,000 visitors to TIJ, and four (4) issues of the digital magazine have been produced as an online 'digi-magazine' albeit on a somewhat limited 'freemium' platform.
Our readership has grown exponentially and there are growing pleas for a print version!
TIJ’s team include Lon Levin, an award-winning creative director for Hollywood studios, and award-winning illustrator and writer with over thirty books to his credit, Gregg Masters, MPH, co-founder, and chief executive officer of XanateMedia, one of the Top 100 Voices in Health Information Technology on twitter as @2healthguru, Mark Susnow, author of Dancing on the River: Navigating Life’s Changes and a former trial attorney. Mark collaborated with Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy and Denis Waitley to produce 101 Great Ways to Improve your Life.
Our board of advisors and “gold medalist” guest contributors include Murray Tinkelman http://www.tinkelmanstudio.com/bio.html, Member of the Society of Illustrators, The New York Art Directors Club and the Society of Publications Designers. Murray is now the Director of the Limited Residency MFA program at the University of Hartford, Hartford Art School, dedicated to illustration. Roxie Munro, author/illustrator of more than 35 children’s books; Glenn Sagon, Chief Executive Officer / Partner of Sagon Phior a top advertising agency; Greg Spalenka, award-winning artist and creator of “Artist-as-Brand” seminars; and Peter Sis, prolific artist/writer and winner of multiple Caldecott awards and recent recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen lifetime achievement award.
Illustrators Journal will continue as a digital interactive edition magazine at $10/year, but creating a print magazine is expensive undertaking and requires a strong subscriber base to be successful….thus a Kickstarter project seeks your help to up-level our current capabilities and to pursue the launch of a print edition of the magazine. It will be a subscription-based, quarterly magazine for the first year and initially a non-interactive, free digital edition. Our goal for year two is to publish bi-monthly.
What will we do with the money?
Our minimum goal is $30,000 but we would ultimately like to raise $50,000 to allow us to transition to a bi-monthly publication sooner and enable us to incorporate video bios, tutorials and interviews. Proceeds will enable us to:
• Uplevel our platform from document based to full turnkey digital interactive features including video, audio and comment enabled user participation
• Secure printing and distribution rights and partners
• Have a booth at targeted trade show events including Book Expo America (BEA) and Illustrators Conference (ICON)
• Provide distribution of the magazine to retail locations including book and art stores
• Obtain equipment necessary to create and edit videos
Funding after we meet our goal?
Yes! Any money above our minimum goal will go towards other much needed areas of expansion. This includes researching and writing, distributing issues to newsstands and around the world, building out our website, expanding our outreach, increasing our editorial staff, building an intern program, and paying the contributors and illustrators we rely on for the great content they provide.
Than you for your support
To thank you for supporting The Illustrators Journal (@TIJournal) Magazine, we’ve created some cool rewards including signed art prints, t-shirts, hats, subscriptions, discounted advertisement opportunities and for any contributing artist patrons a chance to be profiled with your art or included as the cover artist.
A culture that embraces vs. discounts the arts will spawn a more compassionate and humane community. Help us discover and tell these stories, while sharing their root inspiration.
