Update #16: Endless Bummer.

Posted on July 21, 2011

As some of you already know (and some do not) the tour was reaching its middle point when my mother semi-unexpectedly passed away. We all knew she was sick but her passing came faster than anyone imagined for such a fighter.

I do not share this with any need of condolences. I am now with my fantastic family dealing with the loss and the countless details that accompany it. They are a great support and I think we can get through it all together.

After consultation with these great people, it seems like the tour will actually continue. This as as she would have wanted it and it looks like we can work through the rest of our process while I continue on. I only share this with all of you, friends and strangers, to explain why some replies to questions are taking a while and why some rewards are a little slower to send out than I had planned.

If you need anything quickly, please do not hesitate to get in touch - really. I can deal with your needs, too.

I just want everyone to know that my mother my my biggest supporter and a great fan of all art and craft. She followed my travels religiously and always believed in the work I do. If the internet can be accessed from the great beyond she is watching me with pride. She will be missed dearly but her wild spirit lives on in all the crazy creative things I take on. I know this for a fact.

I know you weren't asking for condolences, but I wanted to express that my sorrows are added to yours. Any woman who could help create a woman as amazing as yourself must surely be missed. I wish you nothing but luck as you continue your journey.

Update #15: From the Road.

Posted on June 20, 2011

Touring the Museum of Ephemerata in Austin, TX

Phew! I thought leaving Toronto was crazy. We are now one month and one day into the tour and this balmy, late night in Providence, Rhode Island, feels like the first chance I have had to (almost) catch my breath.

It's true, I am deeply on the road now and starting to get my 'highway legs' (ie. coasting on the chaos and learning to work with it as opposed to against it).

And, although not a calm week by any stretch, this next week is going to hold my best chance at catch-ups in (and for) a while. I am packing up more rewards, updating all the lingering posts on the blog and remembering to send my family notes so they know I am still alive.

Please, let me tantalize you with some nonsensical snippets from the first month on the road (to be fleshed out in more coherence through the magic of blogging) - swimming holes, bats, giant guns that are also bars, a haircut from the mayor, lewd hillbillies, googly eyes, booze in a jar, hail storms, barn quilts and macaroni Queen Elizabeth. Guys, the world is weird and amazing - and we haven't even gone west yet.

Update #14: It's On.

Update #13: Nose to the Grindstone.

Posted on May 6, 2011

The homestead kitchen table - prime thought-sorting space to get me going.

I am home (whatever that means)! I got back into Toronto two evenings ago and have been working steadily to get sorted, go through mail, ship orders reply to emails and meet with potential subletters. Wow. This is going to be an incredibly intense two weeks.

Central to my stress is the fact that I have still not found an appropriate vehicle to tour in - my wish list is a challenge to fulfill. But if feels impossible to have come this far without pushing through this obstacle. If you would like to read a bit more about the car hunt and/or think you have any leads to contribute, you can read the car run-down on my blog here. Any tips and leads are greatly appreciated.

But back to you; I am working on finishing all the backer surveys today and tonight. The faster you all fill them out, the faster you will get your goodies! Hooray!

The Sweetie Pie Press is an independently owned and operated art and craft operation that is run out of a modest and warm apartment in Toronto. We also plan annual tours and sometimes act as a completely organic connective tissue between artists and makers the world over.

The Sweetie Pie Press is run entirely by Becky Johnson. Becky also helms City of Craft, an indie craft organization in Toronto that presents a major holiday craft fair, gallery events, trunk shows and other craft-based programming. Becky is a contributor to the Toronto Craft Alert, too - an online source for critical thinking and news about craft happenings in and around Toronto. She teaches skill-based workshops, shares ideas for free and sometimes lectures about topics from the indie craft world. She also crochets just about every day.
