DeLaVina's first studio album! It's gonna be good. I promise.
It has been my hope that someday I would be able to record these songs in a fashion that would pay proper respect to the people and events that have inspired them. That day has come. 'The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel: Songs for an Empirical Patriot' is the culmination of nearly a decade of songwriting that began while I was a sailor in the US Navy. Although I believe the album's theme can be narrowed down to patriotism, it is impossible to ignore the role that God, politics, family, food, wounds, love, hatred, booze, charity, bulls, bears, Indians, redcoats, trains, planes, automobiles, and your grandma's secret recipe play in defining who you are and what you are willing to sacrifice (or not sacrifice) for your country.
There are questions that will remain questions beyond our stay. And there are answers that, just like the questions, will follow us and the generations to come to our graves. It is always my intention when writing to highlight the two, hopefully leaving enough room in between the lines for the music. As a work of art that I believe is truly worthy of your attention, time and money, let me just thank in advance those of you who have supported me in the past, whether by driving through substantial traffic to come and hear me play, or just opening your hearts and homes to my minstrel ways! Thank you. To those of you who have yet to experience all that DeLaVina has come to be, this here is your first opportunity to bring to the airwaves of a lonely nation the syndicated progression of notes and ballads that are certain to rile the conscious and awake from its slumber, a stubborn yet incredibly beautiful nation.
On Funding the Album
In 1982 (the year I was born) Michael Jackson released his hit album 'Thriller'. Today Thriller remains the number one best-selling album of all time. It had a production budget of $750,000. Three decades later, we're in the glorious age of independent music where small-town productions can be heard by a relatively large audience. It is my hope for this album to be heard. Therefore, I need to have it Mixed and Mastered to a standard acceptable to the ears that will be willing to play it, whether that be on a car stereo or over a super-powered radio antenna. Lets not forget that once the music is ready to be heard it must be printed up or made available on some medium appropriate for the 21st century. And did I mention the album can be enhanced by adjoining it to the book (only the literate need apply). Sounds like a lot, right? It is. My budget is comparatively miniscule but I'm confident that with the people I've come to trust in the City of Angels, I can accomplish what the album still requires with the goal set on this campaign (who needs Quincy Jones when you've got Mike Schadel). People have worked for virtually free to make this album happen and the quality has yet to be compromised. That's where you come in. I hope you will. I won't disappoint you.
p.s. Dara Oum created the wonderful video. He's the real deal and I don't know that I'll ever be able to repay him.

If you've never known what it's like to be a part of the 1%, you will once you've dedicated yourself to this sort of philanthropy ... There's no reward I can think of that appropriately recognizes the significance of such generosity. However, we've got to put something in your hands. Sooooo, you will receive the original Shakespeare. If you don't know what I'm referring to, let me tell you. When I was 18 I bought my first acoustic-guitar with the money I had saved from a painting job. It's a black-bodied dreadnaught made by Epiphone and it's the inspiration to the song "Shakespeare In My Arms" off of my first album 'Belly of a Whale'. I learned how to play on this guitar and if any of you have the heart to contribute at this level, well, I'll learn how to graciously give it away. It will come signed with a wee love note. Oh and did I mention you'll get everything offered above.Estimated delivery: Dec 2012
