The Blue Earth Book supports photographers working on social and environmental stories that need to be told.
Blue Earth believes visual storytelling can create positive change. We support documentary photography projects on critical environmental and social issues through fundraising support, distribution opportunities, and a collaborative community. Since 1996, we’ve helped close to 100 photographers tell their stories. A few of our current projects include:

Energy And Ecology by Garth Lenz - Shocking images of unsustainable energy development from the Alberta Tar Sands and beyond.

Niger Delta by Samuel James - A visual record of the ongoing struggle for power, land and oil in Nigeria’s Niger Delta.

The People Of Clouds by Matt Black - Documenting the unraveling of one the world's oldest farming cultures in the Mixteca region of southern Mexico.
Projects like these make a difference. The images are featured in magazines, museums and TED talks, on billboards, in books and the halls of Congress. But making long-term documentary projects happen is increasingly difficult. From raising funds to finding mentors and navigating the shifting media landscape, photographers need our help.
The Blue Earth Book will highlight a collection of Blue Earth’s most important projects, projects like Dina Kantor's Treece, Samantha Box’s Invisible and John Lowenstein’s Shadow Lives USA. Featured portfolios will be selected and edited by Whitney Johnson, Director of Photography at The New Yorker. We hope this will become the first edition of an annual series.
Your support of this book will not only send a volume of top-tier visual storytelling to your table, it will also ensure that Blue Earth's photographers can continue to bring attention to critical environmental and social issues.
Blue Earth Alliance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit (Federal EIN 91-1682270). All contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Tax receipts will be provided at time of delivery.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Like all creative projects, The Blue Earth Book is a work in progress, and after funding there will always remain unforeseen challenges.
At the same time, our sponsored projects have produced dozens of photography books over the years. Also, The Blue Earth Book is being prepared from our sponsored documentary projects, so we will be leveraging our pre-existing collaborative relationships with our photographers. Publication services are being provided by Gary Hawkey at iocolor in Seattle, an experienced printing firm well known for its fine art books. In addition to editing by Whitney Johnson, Director of Photography at The New Yorker, editing for the book is also being provided by Jason Houston and design assistance by Benj Drummond, both members of our Board of Directors and experienced professional photographers.
Our editors have a strong vision for The Blue Earth Book. We have already been talking to photographers about how best to represent their Blue Earth projects in the book. If funded, though unforeseen issues can occur with any creative project, we have confidence in our ability to print and deliver The Blue Earth Book on schedule.
