The history of the Warez Scene, and how the entertainment industries and law enforcement tried to stop it.
SOPA. PIPA. Megaupload.com. The Pirate Bay. Most people on the internet know what at least one of those are. What most people don't know is that 95% of everything on websites and torrent sites dedicated to copyright infringement comes from a small community known as the Warez Scene.
This is the Scene is the history of a small group of people on the internet who's goal was to make content free to themselves. Unlike what law enforcement agencies would have you believe, the goal of The Scene was never to make their releases spread all over the world. It was a place where like minded people could enjoy doing something in their own clique. Just like any other "scene" in the world.
This book is not pro-piracy. This book is also not anti-piracy. This book is only the history of The Scene, and the law enforcement and entertainment industry people who tried to stop it. It is through the eyes of a person close to the top of that world, who's life was forever changed by being a member of it.
I believe that there has never been a book about this subject. The subject of copyright infringement is a very important issue in the world today and a book like this, about the top end of piracy, is an amazing opportunity to inform people about this world.
The cost of acquiring documents through the United States courts PACER system is not cheap, nor is paying for documents from the Department of Justice. I have recently put in the largest FOIA request about copyright infringement in history and like many people think, nothing is cheap when it comes to the Government.
From 2001 until 2005 I was a senior member of The Scene. I have been in some of the largest release groups in the history of piracy, and I firmly believe the only people who can properly tell the history of The Scene are people who were in it.
