I hereby challenge critics of all backgrounds to act as producers and apply their customary criticisms to an album in progress!
Basically, like so many others, I am in the process of recording an album. The hook is that I am challenging any interested blogger, reviewer, or critic to essentially act as producer(s)! Think of it as a crowd-sourcing project...
At some point in their life, everyone has read a review of something that made them think such absurd thoughts as "what does that person know anyways..." The truth is, these individuals are usually selected to pass their judgment because they have a great deal of knowledge on the subject.
What would happen if we used that temerity for good? What if these harsh criticisms were lobbied against the work in progress? Hopefully, we'll find out!
If funded, I will reach out to some of my favourite critics and extend the invitation to them to aide in the making of the next album. I want to have their critical input at every stage of the process and find out if their criticisms do indeed make for a better record in the end.
Used to working alone, this will require a great degree of patience and potentially sacrifice (drama!) on my end. On their end, confidence that their critical ear is in tune!
After paying the Kickstarter fees, the money raised is for the obvious- to make the communication, recording, and finally the Coup de Grâce... pressing of a limited edition 180-gram vinyl! As a bonus, the great folks at United Record Pressing have offered to give everyone who donates over the $71 level a free test pressing! See http://www.urpressing.com/kickstarter/ for details.
The only other thing I want to point out is that the prizes are meant to be personal. If you are contributing to this project, I want to put more of my own hard work and personal touch into making something especially for you. Any support you could give will be appreciated more than any handmade trinket could express, but regardless, will serve as a small token that tells you that your support means a great deal to me!

Video updates will provide you with an intimate look inside the making of the record. You’ll see the excitement of working in a small recording space, and experience the thrill of things gone horribly awry! As if that weren’t enough, you’ll get and exclusive recording of my master-storyteller of a father recounting his one day of employment at a pickle factory. Plus… wait, for it… vinyl and digital goods!

What’s with these random numbers, right? Well, this one’s for a totally random bit of swag, that’s why!! I’m going to send you two of my favourite recipes, replete with Alton Brown-style notes. Recipes? Yeah, real men cook. Get over it. Also, a free test pressing courtesy of United Record Pressing, the vinyl, the digi-mix tape, and other digital goods!

I will be producing notebooks for anyone funding this much. My brain is a little left of center, and the notebook could be tons of things. Each one 100% unique, full of random lyrics, drawings, “art,” ideas, dental appointment cards, beef jerky… you never really know with me. You will also get a free test pressing courtesy of United Record Pressing as well as the finished vinyl and digital goods!

Some artists are like “…and for only $1000 I’ll cover any song you want!!” You know how you beat the competition? You one-up ‘em. This is the level where I will WRITE AN ORIGINAL SONG FOR YOU! Don’t get too pumped- it might be awful. I might pull a Joaquin Phoenix, though I’m certainly open to suggestions. Keep it for yourself or share! Also, the free test pressing courtesy of United Record Pressing, finished vinyl and digi-goods!

Since this will put you in exclusive company, you can tell me a specific mix that you want of the record. Tell me you hate the flute, want the banjo louder, take all the noise out, or to just leave a song off of “your copy” entirely. I will remix the record however you want! Includes the free test pressing courtesy of United Record Pressing, finished vinyl and digital goods, too!

At this point you could probably just call me your own little monkey. I’ll sing whatever songs you want, prank call anyone, dress in drag and sniff glue… naw, but seriously, at this level you'll get personal contact with me that will make you wish you donated less. We will be on a first name basis forever if you want. You’ll get credit on the record, plus the free test pressing courtesy of United Record Pressing, finished vinyl and digital stuff mentioned, and if you live near the Great Lakes or Appalachian hills, I’ll come do a house show for you. Those are my favourite!
