An urban exhibition of large-scale interactive portraits.
"Debbie Baxter and Dawn DeAno are photographers with a passion for making connections and bringing untold stories to the public arena. (To read more about us, see our bios to the right.)"
ABOUT THE DREAMERS PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
The Dreamers are a group of homeless individuals who developed The Right 2 Dream Too project (R2DToo) http://www.facebook.com/pages/Right-2-Dream-Too/291307830880922--a tent community in downtown Portland. R2Dtoo has the simple purpose to provide a place where un-housed people who cannot access affordable housing or shelter space can rest or sleep without being rousted by police or private security and without being under the constant threat of violence. A vacant lot (4th and Burnside) in downtown Portland was donated to these ‘Dreamers’ by the property owner and up to 50 individuals and couples have slept there each night ever since.
Debbie and Dawn firmly believe that the stories of the Dreamers need to be told. Their stories are about courage, hope, belonging, integrity and community. They are stories about humanity, stories that can connect us, stories that can soften our hearts and change our minds.
ABOUT INSIDE OUT
"I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we'll turn the world...INSIDE OUT." – JR
INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world.
The Inside Out Project is a creation of the artist JR, recipient of the 2011 TED Prize. You can visit the below links to find out more about JR's Ted Talk and the InsideOut Project.
It was the energy and enthusiasm of JR and his work with the INSIDE OUT project that inspired us to tell the compelling stories of the Dreamers--amazingly resourceful, creative and dedicated individuals in our city.
We would like to participate in the INSIDE OUT movement by creating an urban exhibition of 22 poster-sized black and white interactive portraits of individuals living at The Right 2 Dream Too community. 18 images at 3’x5’ will be installed along the east entrance to the Burnside bridge as well as 4 6’x10’ foot images in downtown Portland near The Right 2 Dream Too location, 4th and Burnside. A QR code will be included to allow savvy tech users to scan and hear first hand how the R2DToo space has impacted the lives of the individuals viewed. Our dream is that this project helps R2DToo and the dreamers find more support and connection.
This project will happen with your generous support through donations. Your dollars will go toward printing these large images and purchasing the materials and tools for pasting (brushes, squeegees, wheat paste ingredients, buckets). Your support will help make visible these individuals and their stories. Your support will bring awareness to this incredible tent community in Portland, the people and the right to a safe and dry place to rest one’s head at night. We thank you in advance!
