May California Tour: Cid Pearlman, and dancers from Estonia and the USA, get to know each other during the long dark Estonian Winter.
Cid Pearlman/Performance Projects presents
From Estonia With Love
This is what we do in winter and other dances
***performed by an international cast***
In 2009/10 I was a Fulbright Scholar in Tallinn, Estonia. One of the highlights of my year there was working with an extraordinary group of dancers – three Estonians and two Americans: Tiina Mölder, Rain Saukas, Helen Reitsnik, Alexis Steeves and David King. Starting as strangers – foreign bodies in the same room – we created a new work that reflects on the process of us getting to know each other during the long dark Estonian winter.
We now have the
opportunity to share this work with audiences in California. Last year we successfully
raised $6,000 to bring Tiina, Helen, Rain and Alexis to the USA this May. Here’s our schedule of upcoming performances:
May 17-18, Santa Cruz Dance/Motion at the Mill, 8pm
May 19-20, San Francisco International Arts Festival, Sat 9pm, Sun 5pm
May 24, Department of World Arts and Cultures, UCLA, noon
May 25, Live Arts Los Angeles, 8pm
For our California tour, composer Jonathan Segel is reworking the score, Clyde Sheets returns as our light designer for the first time since 2006, and we will have new costumes by Estonian scenographer Pille Kose. In Santa Cruz and Los Angeles we will also present works choreographed by the dancers from Estonia (see photos below). At each stop there will be master classes, workshops for children and/or lecture/demonstrations.
The funds we raised in 2011 paid for plane tickets and visas – and I want to thank again everyone who donated to our USA Projects campaign. However, we now need to raise a minimum of $3,000 to finance the portion of the production expenses which will not be covered by box office receipts or other sources of income. The project budget includes light, costume & set design, a reworking of the music, dancers’ per diems, photo shoot, marketing, video documentation, and renting a van to take seven of us from San Francisco to Los Angeles. None of these things are particularly romantic, but they are absolutely necessary to the success of the tour and the longevity of the dance company.
Any contribution you make, large or small, makes a great deal of difference. Help us share this work with California audiences, we bring it to you FROM ESTONIA WITH LOVE.
