Just a quick note before bed to say THANK YOU! We reached our goal today, 43 hours before the deadline. It's a relief to know we have the funds we need to have a successful show.
Today was again busy with rehearsals. We were at Cabrillo this morning and at Motion Pacific in the afternoon. I saw Helen & Tiina's duet, Facing Forest, for the first time today and it is really lovely. And Rain & Alexis' duet, how quickly these accidents, is also exceptional. I am excited for Santa Cruz and LA audiences to be introduced to this work.
Tomorrow is more rehearsals, a radio interview at KZSC - the UCSC radio station, and technical rehearsals for two of the dances. In the down time I will be writing a grant for a future project, and putting together the program information for the Santa Cruz and LA shows.
I am posting a few photos from the dancers' first week in California.
The dancers arrived Tuesday and we've been busy rehearsing. I think I got contact jet lag - but we all seem to be recovering. For a few days all seven of us were in David and my small apartment, but now the dancers are all reasonably dispersed.
Today light designer Clyde sheets will come to rehearsal, and we will work with the new costumes for the first time.
I am posting some photos from the day the dancers arrived. We took a slow drive down the coast from SFO to Santa Cruz, stopping in Half Moon Bay for lunch, at the beach, and at Swanton Berry Farms for fresh strawberry shortcake and a ride in a hammock.
We had a great time working with UCSC students yesterday, who came in on a Friday for a master class. Afterwards we went to Henry Cowell Park to show the dancers the redwoods. I'll post photos of that in the next few days.
We need only $250 more to reach our kickstarter goal. I'm hoping we'll get there by midnight on May 14th -- so we'll have a little breathing time.
Incredibly we have a week left and only need to raise $535 more. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I don't want to jinx it, but I am pretty confident we will make our goal of $3,000. After that we will all breathe easier. The dancers and I are grateful to have a community that supports us so generously in making and touring this work.
Tiina, Helen, Alexis and Rain land at SFO tomorrow midday. Today I am baking Estonian rye bread and cleaning the house in anticipation of their arrival. And writing a grant for my next project, "Your Body in Not a Shark," and completing an artist-in-residence application. Trying to clear my plate before they arrive, but not sure it will happen. I am hoping there is an assistant in my future...
I am really feeling the kickstarter love this week. We have reached 60% of our goal with 10 days to go.
The dancers arrive in just a few days, and in addition to rehearsing, performing, workshops, and lecture demonstrations - we also plan to hike in the redwoods, kayak in Monterey Bay, and introduce them to our fabulous friends and community in California.
Our t-shirts are getting printed this week. I posted the image by Kristina Paabus last time. These are benefits at the $250 level, and a limited amount will be for sale at our performances.
Composer Jonathan Segel is continuing to work on the music, and each iteration is better than the last. I am posting a photo of one of Pille Kose's new costumes. I won't see them in person till the dancers arrive Tuesday.
We start rehearsing on Thursday and will have one week till our first performances in Santa Cruz. I am also rehearsing with local dancers who will perform catch-as-catch-can from 2006. They are doing a great job with the movement and I am excited to see this dance remounted again.
We still need to raise $1200 - so spread the word if you can, and THANKS AGAIN!
