I am working on a project that I plan to release in November, 2011. It’s called Elephabet, and will be an alphabet book featuring my handmade wood elephant sculptures. For each letter of the alphabet, I have chosen a word and am in the process of making one or more figures that embody that word. The back of the book will have a glossary so all of my portmanteaus will be explained, as well as some insight into the words I have chosen. Photographs of my sculptures will be used to make the book, a set of five 1" buttons, and a stop action animation. I will print this book in both softcover and hardbound, and every book will come with a dvd of the animation.
Everyone who pledges $5 or more will get a set of five elephant buttons. This is an image I made in Photoshop to show how the buttons will look. Since I haven't completed the original pieces for the project at this point, I don't know who will make the final cut, but they are guaranteed to be cute as a......button!
Here’s a stop-action animation I made last year featuring my dogs, just to put you in the mood. (Please note that it was the very first animation I ever made, so excuse any errors--look out for the boom box elephant!)
With the launch of Elephabet this November, I will also offer all of the original sculptures I made for this project for sale on the Bunny with a Toolbelt Etsy site.
Being a backer even at the $1 level means you get to join in on the fun! I will post updates here on Kickstarter at least once a week. If you're signed up to receive updates from this project, they'll magically appear in your email inbox and you can watch the project as it evolves.
This fundraising campaign will help me print a first edition run of books and dvds. I will also use a portion of the funds to commission an original piece of music for my animation and hire a professional photographer. Folks who pre-purchase their Elephabet books via this Kickstarter campaign get free shipping at the very least (non U.S. orders have to pay a teeny bit,) the limited edition five button set, and protection from a possible price increase when the book releases this November, so hop on board right now and help the Elephabets come to life!

My elephant sculptures are priced anywhere from $45 to $150 each. I will establish the prices when this body of work is completed. Shipping of artwork is not included in this price, and typically adds $5 for US orders and $10 overseas.

I expect to publish and ship all books and elephants by the end of November. I will use the least expensive shipping method, so cannot guarantee all parcels will arrive before Christmas, especially international shipments. I will contact all backers to see if they would like expedited shipping sometime in November.

Backers who choose to receive original work will be contacted when I have completed the book and animation. I will let you know exactly what elephants are available in your pledge tier at that time, but I will try to give you a good idea of pieces and estimated values will be via my Kickstarter updates. First dibs go to Kickstarter backers, and all remaining work will be available for sale via my Etsy site sometime in November.
The way I plan to conduct the choosing of the elephants is to allow backers to choose their pieces ranked from earliest bidder to latest bidders in each pledge level. For example, if you were the first person to pledge at the $170 level, then you will be first to pick from the elephants valued at $150. The same will follow for the three other pledge levels that receive original art.
If your pledge level runs out of your favorites, I will allow you to either raise your pledge amount for a more expensive piece, or pick another piece from my Etsy shop. I cannot refund any money pledged via Kickstarter.

I expect to sell the softcover books for $14 and hardcover for $20. The button packs will sell for $5 each.

All of the elephants in this book are one of a kind and will be available for sale sometime in November via my Etsy site. I need to hold onto every piece until the book and animation are completed to make sure I get all the photography right.
For as little as $1, you're signed up to receive notification of the exact time and day they will be ready to purchase, so sit tight, buttercup! Chances are, you'll get your very favorite elephant for your very own.

Of course! All backers at any pledge level who are outside of the United States are expected to contribute to shipping costs. If you pledged for the $5 button pack, add $1, if you want a paper or hardback book, add $5, and if you are pledging for a book plus an original piece of art, please add $10.

I have two personas as an artist--one is under my own name, where I create craft-influenced sculptures and installations that speak about the relationships between humans and nature. I have shown this work with Velvet da Vinci Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Fuller Craft Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Indianapolis Art Center, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
I have a deep love of design, so I sometimes work under an alter ego: Bunny with a Toolbelt. This body of work includes small figurative sculptures that are sometimes functional (nativity sets, wedding cake toppers.) Bunny with a Toolbelt perfectly encapsulates my love for learning and working in many different art media with my fondness for occasionally appearing in public in a big floppy bunny suit.
In addition to Etsy, I sell my Bunny with a Toolbelt work at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Oregon College of Art and Craft, The Center for Wood in Art, and Crafty Wonderland's biannual bazaar in my hometown Portland, Oregon. The work I show on my Etsy site has been featured in the Style section of the Sunday New York Times, Brides Magazine, and ReadyMade Magazine, among others.
