Natural Disaster Cards outside of Kickstarter
About a month ago I put Rolling Freight up for pre-order on the APE Games retail site ookoodook.com. As part of the pre-order, I made the Natural Disaster cards available. As most of you know, the Natural Disaster cards were a bonus for the Rolling Freight Kickstarter project. My intent was for it to be not ONLY for the Kickstarter, but my phrase 'not available in stores' certainly made it sound like it was Kickstarter-only.
Some backers pointed this out, and I immediately took the Natural Disaster cards off the pre-order.
About a week later I remembered that I'd included rules for the Natural Disaster cards as part of the rulebook, and included text to contact apegames.com for information on how to get Natural Disaster cards for your set.
So here's what I'd like to do: Kickstarter backers will get the Natural Disaster cards as promised, but will also get a Kickstarter-exclusive Texas map. This map (see below) was designed to be an apegames.com download, but we'll instead print copies for each copy of the game that we ship for Kickstarter backers. We'll print it on thick paper, and quarter-fold it so that it fits nicely into the Rolling Freight box. This map is designed as a quick 2-3 player map which can be played in about an hour.
In this case, the Natural Disaster cards would still be available to those that pre-order the game from APE, at conventions, or contact APE later to purchase the cards.
What do you think? If this is still a problem for backers, then we'll go back to the drawing board and come up with something else. I'd rather not change the rulebook at this point, as it would set the project back.
Sound off!
Kevin

It will be printed on 100 lb paper. Since it will be quarter-folded, you'll want to reverse-fold it so that it sits flat. We've found that works find for our purposes.
Creator Martin Tyman on December 16, 2011
I am good with getting a Texas map. Actually, I think it is a better "exclusive". Will it be printed on paper thick enough to be playable without putting it under plexiglass?
Creator APE Gamer on October 19, 2011
I was trying to say that it was never a Kickstarter-exclusive deal, but (apparently widely) interpreted to be that. I'm therefore trying to make up for the misunderstanding by providing an item that IS Kickstarter-exclusive. Hopefully that makes up for any possible bad press.
Creator Dave Heberer on October 19, 2011
I never figured it would be exclusive to kick-starter people forever. But it is sad that this seems more and more common, changing the deal after it's made. I won't back out, but it isn't great press.

Kickstarter exclusives??????? LESSON LEARNED IS CORRECT!!!!!!!
Creator Crash Games on October 18, 2011
At this point I just want the game. Lesson learned.

COOL!!! This map looks fun!
Creator Darrellkh on October 17, 2011
I'm fine with this. Let's get this game out the door! I'm dying to play it.
Creator Harry Hammermueller on October 17, 2011
I love the idea of an extra map included in the game.
Creator Dystopian Holdings on October 17, 2011
I agree 100% with what Hoyle A. said.
Creator Hoyle Anderson on October 17, 2011
It's better for everyone to get a better game. The extra map is a good and welcome compromise. I'm looking forward to playing this!
Creator Craig Muxlow on October 17, 2011
Its a fine idea, thanks.
Creator Anders H. Pedersen on October 17, 2011
I do not like exclusive items in the first place.
Games are played to have fun and everyone should be in on equal footing.
I do not care whether they support the game now or buy it 5 years from now, they should still have the same options available one way or another.
Since the cards were never labeled "Kickstarter Exclusive" I do not see the problem in the first place.
But that is just me and I know some people can become pretty anal when it comes to "exclusive" stuff. So I guess this solution is fine.
I would probably never have taken the time to print out the alternate map anyway. So as someone else said, we are getting more than we initially pledged for, which is always fine.

This is great. It means I get more stuff than I was originally promised.
There's a fable I was told in Russia, by a Russian. A genie appears before a Russian peasant and offers him one wish. The only catch is that, whatever he wishes for, his neighbors will get double. After thinking about it,, the peasant asks to be blinded in one eye.
So, the deal you offered may not work in Russia. In the US, everyone should be happy with it.
Creator John Fiala on October 16, 2011
I like the idea of the extra map!
Creator David Etherton on October 16, 2011
This option sounds great to me! I love the idea of a smaller map optimized for lower player counts.
Creator Stephen Schaffer on October 16, 2011
I like this option!
I can't wait to play the game.
Creator ParkinT on October 16, 2011
No need to modify the rulebook.
Let me recommend that you could provide an ADDENDUM to the rules but it should include language like: "As a sign of special appreciation for those who backed the production of this game through Kickstarter..." or something to that effect.
Then it would not seem out-of-place to others but acknowledge the special status for kickstarter backers.
{Just a creative idea}
Creator Roy Tan on October 16, 2011
anything that would not set the game availability date back would be good to me!
Creator Nicolas Brassard on October 16, 2011
Count me in as well!
Creator Tim Burnett on October 16, 2011
This is better to me than the cards, so yes this is good with me.
Creator lonejedi on October 16, 2011
I'm happy with that "solution." I honestly wouldn't care about the loss of exclusivity, but any opportunity for more bonuses as a thanks for supporting the Kickstart of a project is just fine with me.
Creator Louis Perrochon on October 16, 2011
Sounds good to me.
Creator SockPuppet on October 16, 2011
I helped because this looks like an interesting game for my play group, and I don't want to be the only person with the natural disaster cards if someone wants a copy of the game.
Creator christophyr on October 16, 2011
The 2-3p map sounds like a good compromise to me, and the end result is more stuff for the amount I pledged.
Creator APE Gamer on October 16, 2011
Yeah, the green on the map as shown here is quite a bit brighter than the printed map that I have. I don't know why that is, but I'll make sure the final map doesn't look like that.
Creator Jeremy LaBove on October 16, 2011
I agree: it seems that the reason it would concern anyone is that they felt like they were getting something exclusive for supporting on kickstarter, and that exclusivity was taken away. But the texas map is a really good idea all around, especially when you can only get a couple friends to come over, and you want a short game.
Creator Thomas Taylor on October 16, 2011
I approve. Free stuff = good.
Creator Ray Smith on October 16, 2011
Not an issue. Whatever you want to do is fine.
(Is that the final map? It's a bit hideous.)
Creator Gary Bishop on October 16, 2011
Sounds good to me also. The game itself is the reason I help kickstarted this project, not the natural disaster cards. The additional map would be nice as an option when playing.
Creator Peter on October 16, 2011
I'm also pretty happy about that solution.
Creator Larry Rice on October 16, 2011
sounds good to me...:-)
