Cartoonist/Illustrator Len Peralta needs help printing Season Two of his popular art/podcast/geeky trading card project "Geek A Week"
What is Geek A Week?
In 2010, I started an online art project called Geek A Week. The goal was to connect with 52 influential geeks from different disciplines - science, music, art, etc. - and draw them as a neat little trading card portrait.
With the help of musical comedy duo, Paul and Storm, who wrote the cardbacks of each and every card, I was not only able to complete the year long project, but I was able to garner the attention of major news outlets like CNN, Yahoo and AOL. The 52 card deck includes the likes of geek luminaries such as musician "Weird Al" Yankovic, comic book legend Stan Lee, founding Apple programmer Steve "Woz" Wozniak, acclaimed author Neil Gaiman and film director Kevin Smith, just to name a few.
As the project neared it's completion in early 2011, one question swirled around me: would I continue the series? Could I continue the series? Well, with the help of you and Kickstarter, I hope to do just that.
Geek A Week Continues...
I am looking to fund the printing of the second installment of my project Geek A Week Series 2.0. The second set will not be as ambitious as the first set, but a bit smaller. 15 cards total. With one secret bonus card as a special incentive.
In addition, if I reach certain funding goals, you will help "unlock" each geek in the series. This will include a new piece of art, the cardback written by Paul and Storm and the podcast interview of the geek.
The geeks you can unlock in this set are:
- Vloggers/Authors Hank and John Green
- Writer Paul Dini
- Geek Girl/Blogger Jill Pantozzi
- Comedian Paul F. Tompkins
- Musician Mike Phirman
- Artist/Entrepreneur Molly Crabapple
- Web Comic Heroes Gabe and Tycho (Penny Arcade)
- Actor Seth Green
- Mythbuster Tory Belleci
- Actress Jeri Ryan
- Game Designer James Ernest
- Web Series Actress/Producer Jessica Mills
- TV Producer Amy Berg
- TV's Favorite Geeks from The Big Bang Theory
- Fantasy Author George R.R. Martin
If this project is successfully funded, I will be able to cover the printing costs of the new set of cards, plus the bonus cards. If I make significantly more than my funding goal ($10,000+), I will also try to fund the printing of the remaining cards of the first set of Geek A Week cards.
What am I paying for?
The money I raise will go pay for printing and fulfillment costs as well as operational costs to do the project.
Why should I fund this?
Geek A Week is a HUGE undertaking - much more than just a run-of-the-mill art project. That's because it is so much more than just art. The process involves getting in touch with the potential subject, interviewing them and the finally drawing them and getting their cardback written. This involves hundreds of e-mails and phone calls not to mention scheduling and approvals - let alone drawing and painting of all the art. It's a huge time commitment to create this pretty awesome slice of 2011 geek culture.
However, I feel that it's the additional time I put into it that makes Geek A Week so much more special than any other art project. The first season was a heck of a lot of fun and a dream project to work on and I hope that Season Two will be more of the same. I hope to surprise and delight you over the next few weeks with some pretty incredible geeky artwork. And at the end of the day, you'll get some cool original art, a set of some limited edition trading cards and the feeling of knowing that you supported an artist who loves doing what they do.
In order to do that, I've created a unique set of incentives which include chances to be drawn as your own Geek A Week portrait, original artwork by me, and the full Geek A Week treatment complete with cardback written by Paul and Storm.
There are also some secret unlockables which I plan on making available as the project gets funded. Keep checking back and see what has been unlocked.
The success of this project depends on your support and your word of mouth. So please share this project on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, text messages - however you get the word out and tell your friends and family to donate to help unlock the entire deck.
Thank you for reading my pitch. I hope you choose to support this and help me create a new card set of Geek A Weekers.
THE OFFICIAL GEEK A WEEK UNLOCKABLES LIST!
As the project gets funded, more geeks (their card and cardback + a new podcast episode) will be unlocked. Check back to see who has been unlocked and tell your friends to support the project to unlock all 16 cards!

FAQ
-
At the moment the only way to do that is to create separate Kickstarter accounts for each one you want to order. Yes, it's cumbersome, but with the limited rewards, it will help me keep clear who wants what.
-
No. They will be autographed by the artist, Len Peralta.
-
Yes. If you are out of the USA, please add an extra $4 per 2 sets you order.
-
I can certainly do group portraits, but please keep the grouping down to 4 people total. Any more than that will be too busy for the card.
