The 99.9 percent true story of plus-sized... sex positive feminist... blues singing activist Candye Kane, in her own words and music.
Thank you all for helping us reach our minimum goal! But we can still use your help. We still need help paying for gas, subway tokens, crew salaries. Meanwhile, we have gotten our venue and performance dates, see below...
THE TOUGHEST GIRL ALIVE is a biographical performance/theatre piece that deals with gang violence, alternative sexuality, hate crimes, women's reproductive rights, social welfare programs, discrimination, and body image... all seen through the vibrant music, moving lyrics and voice of Candye Kane.
The piece uncompromisingly describes various events in Candye's life. Another large focus of the piece is the unique pariah-like attitude of our society towards sex workers. People who work in an industry, that simply could not exist without the participation of the larger society, yet who are treated as less than human.
Candye has an unbelievably diverse constituency. Blues fans, punk rockers, rockabilly kids, sex workers, plus sized women, gays and lesbians...the disenfranchised, find themselves at home under the umbrella of Candye's all-encompassing message of personal empowerment. THE TOUGHEST GIRL ALIVE! is really about the celebration of life, diversity, and a triumph of the spirit. All to a toe tapping swing beat.
Javier Velasco - Director San Diego Ballet. Candye Kane - Blues singer/activist. Kane and Velasco met when Velasco was creating a piece for the San Diego Ballet in 2003. In the course of their discussions, Velasco was drawn to Kane's colorful, dramatic life.
Together, they have created a theatrical piece based on Kane's real life experiences and the music she writes.

Javier - Although, I also choreograph and direct musicals and plays, for a while I have wanted to work on something that deals with larger issues in our society, but that deals with them in a human way. Something beautiful. That means something beyond entertainment... that is also entertaining.
Candye - lt's nice to be able to tell my story to an audience that isn't talking during a set and asking the waiter for more nachos.
By the skin of our teeth. Actually, we have already presented the show once at Moxie Theater in San Diego. We need the money to get the show to the East Coast for the festival where we can get wider exposure by appearing at the Fringe.
It doesn't take much of a math genius to figure out that $6,000 doesn't go that far to get 9 people (Candye, 2 actors, the director, a tech guy and the BAND!) to New York City and put them up... and put on a show for two weeks, but that covers our barebones travel and entry fees. If we are funded at 200 percent ($12,000), we can all have our own bed and perhaps pay everyone involved a somewhat decent amount.
Special thanks to Scrojo for The Toughest Girl Alive artwork and Daren Scott for the photos used in our video. Yes, they ARE from the Moxie production of the show, so THAT is what you are supporting.
And thank you in advance for your support,
Candye, Javier & the cast of The Toughest Girl Alive
Well, the $6,000 that we asked for is pretty much the bare minimum we need for travel and housing (as well as some minimal advertising). FringeNYC is providing us with a venue at no cost. So that is taken care of. Currently, the performers are doing this for little monetary compensation. If we make in excess of our minimum target, not only will we be able to pay our actors and musicians a decent amount for their services, but we may also be able to rent more hotel rooms. Meaning that Javier doesn't have to sleep on the floor for 2 weeks. So rest assured that any amount that we get in excess of the minimum is still going to be used directly on this project and is still needed and necessary.
