Update #4: Ready to Roll

Posted on August 16, 2010

While the Way Place was sitting in a garden in Carmel Valley, there was an opportunity to watch the sun move around the structure. The impression that it gave to one of the observers, "There are so many beautiful individual images on the canvas panels it is amazing. It is like hundreds of paintings stretched over the 3-d frame creating a totally encompassing visual experience."

The final addition to the Way Place is the flooring. A circle (10' in diameter) made of burlap has been painted black. On to the burlap, an assortment of random-shaped, cream-colored carpet pieces are laid out to look like a sandstone terrace.

The Way Place was dismantled yesterday and is packed up and ready to be placed on the truck. On Friday, August 27th, it will start its journey to Black Rock City. We don't know where are are going to be placed on the Playa. But when you find us, we'll be happy to see you.

Update #3: Swirling Symbols

Posted on August 5, 2010

This video of the interior panels of the Way Place doesn't do it justice but it gives you a glimpse into the energy and the intricacy of the symbols. We are now working on lighting. The proposal for the interior is low wattage LEDs set in a reflective disk that will hang from the peak along the PVC frame. Then 4 red chinese paper lanterns from the corners at the mid-level horizontal bar. This will allow the intricate patterns of the symbols to glow. The exterior will be white flood lights to highlight the exterior symbols and prevent any art car collisions.

Update #2: Way Place Test Build

Posted on August 2, 2010

We had a very exciting Saturday. The crew gathered at a friend's home in Carmel Valley to take a run at a test build for the Way Place. We had the full structure up in just 2 hours and all went smoothly. Click on this link to see a time-lapse photo slide show of the build.

We experimented with a few lighting options. We feel that an exterior spot light on 2 sides will highlight the symbols (and prevent any art car crashes.) Then a chandelier of plastic disks with tiny LED lights to hang from the peak of the interior will outline the fantastic dynamic images inside.

Update #1: Erecting and Dissecting

Posted on July 14, 2010

We had a great work day last Sunday. J and A set up the frame for the Way Place in less than an hour. E and C spent a few hours leaning over the light table and outlined the edges of the symbols to prepare them for the iridescent highlight paint. We also cut out a cardboard template for the canvas panels. It will be used to trim and hem the canvas triangles. We are working in the next 2 weeks to hem and grommet all the canvas triangles. By the end of July, we plan to have a full build of the Way Place. It is so exciting to see it all come together.
