About this project
Last fall I decided to write an album of songs based on my children's favorite books. After sitting down with a big stack of them, I realized I simply couldn't get past the book on the top of the stack, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. “Once upon a time there was a little house, way out in the country…” The small and sturdy pink house wonders about those city lights far in the distance, and Burton describes and illustrates in great and wondrous detail how the city comes to surround her. Is there a way out for a dilapidated little house that longs to see the stars again? Described as one of the most beloved children’s books of the 20th century, The Little House inspired me as a child. Both of my children, Carrie and Sam, love the book as much as I did.
Because I was pleased with the songs I wrote about The Little House, I performed them with a full band and narrator for both adult and children’s audiences. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and even the Atlanta Journal Constitution reviewed the concert and called the songs “a smart and creative undertaking, something special…”
So here I am, feeling very much myself like the little house, asking you for financial support as I begin a new musical project. My band and I are ready to record, and we hope to have this album out and ready by April 16th, when we perform our next children’s show. (We will also be performing songs based on The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak.) I see this recording as only the beginning of many more albums to come. Not only are you helping me put out this album, but you are also helping me to start the momentum of putting music to many more children’s books in the future.
Will my adult singer/songwriter career continue? Of course! I’m headed into the studio in June to work with acclaimed producer Dirk Powell, and that album will come out on the Signature Sounds label later this year. The Little House Songs, on the other hand, are my labor of love, a fun and glorious way to express my creativity, collaborate with other artists, and support an art form I love: beautifully-illustrated, classic children’s books. Please join me in this endeavor. I thank you so much for your support.
To art for art’s sake! Caroline Herring
