Help me realize my goal of completing one hundred 5 inch square portraits and create a cohesive body of work for exhibition.
My primary goal in applying for an artist residency was to challenge myself. I needed a place where I would have the time and physical space to focus solely on my painting without interruption. Being able to create in a supportive and community oriented environment also has its rewards and this residency involves me providing classes, workshops and volunteer time as part of it’s requirements.
I had been painting in a variety of genres and was using old family photos as subject matter reference in my paintings. However, I keenly felt a need to execute a more cohesive body of work for this upcoming exhibit. I chose the goal of producing one hundred 5” square portraits primarily due to the encouragement of friends who were moved by some of my very small portraits. Portraiture has the capacity to stir deep emotions, evoke memories and present us with a profound sense of mystery and narrative.
This is my very first opportunity to have a gallery exhibition. So, obviously, I am working hard to do my best possible work. In order to reach this goal I need quality professional art materials which at the moment I am sorely lacking. These supplies include paint, medium, cleaners, brushes, panels and hanging/framing products. So far I have painted 45 portraits, run through several tubes of paint and pulled my hair out trying to work with cheap brushes. Replacing my damaged brushes with professional brushes and replenishing the dwindling tubes of paint is my first priority. There are still 55 portraits left to paint & the show deadline is fast approaching.
Transportation costs have also presented an unexpected financial burden and I simply cannot deny that the cost of travel (gas, bridge tolls, etc) to the studio has impacted my family’s household budget. Lastly I have to produce and distribute a certain amount of promotional materials to advertise the opening event and to help secure a successful attendance for the exhibit’s duration.
Your help in defraying these expenses would be invaluable. Please consider making my first ever gallery show a success. To the right is a list of rewards to express my sincere and heart felt gratitude for your pledged donations.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to and view my Kickstarter video.
(Many thanks to my son for putting together the video & to my friends for suggesting Kickstarter and encouraging me in the pursuit of my dreams.)
