About this project

Map of the Heart is a series of participatory, public art projects combining true stories and the collective imagination of the individuals of a community to develop audience-interactive visual fictions.

The project has been done in Sandnes, Norway in support of Sandnes City Council and Rogaland County Council of Norway in 2009; Santa Fe, NM, USA in support of Santa Fe Art Institute in 2010

An audience interacting with the interactive photo based installations on a touch-screen @ KINOKINO, Sandness, Norway

Pieces of each of the city has been developed into an interactive photo based installations on a touch-screen, and in addition to that, Film posters for the project in Norway, and canvas puzzle for Santa Fe project.

An audience interacting with the canvas puzzle installation in an Exhibition @ Portage Artspace, Chicago, IL USA

The process begins by me following 15-25 participants of each city through their daily activities and take photos and collect their personal stories. At the end of the day, I invite them to my studio and ask them to draw their subjective map of the city and collect their stories related to specific sites. I use parts of all participants' maps and make one map of the city which become the interface of the interactive installation. Then I use segments of the true stories from each person to construct an interconnected fictional story. The fictional story is portrayed with photos and text in various interactive installations and public performances. The outcome of the project not only portrays what the city of the subject is like but also plays with the probabilities of each of participants and community through collective imagination.

For Chicago’s Map of the Heart I decided to limit the scope to focus on a particular theme because of the difficulty of portraying such a large city with such a small number of people. “Female Power” is the theme I have chosen to represent the characteristics of hospitality, versatility, compromise and feminine physical beauty. It doesn’t limit the participants to be women but to whom practice these characteristics. I feel like these characteristics  are more appreciated than ever before and they deserve to be celebrated. These characteristics move contemporary society forward, subtly but firmly. The process has been started on 10/14/2011 and I have followed Lady DJ D (42, DJ & a mother of a son), Alberto-a male artist practice hospitality and versatility in his art practice and life, Maria-a 74 years of Korean-American (1st generation of immigration) business woman, and a single mother of 2 sons(for 40 years!), and a variety people are on the line to be followed.

In addition to the interactive installation, Map of the Heart, Chicago will have a public performance with wearable sculptures. I currently envision long jackets with feather like parts with printed photos that can be moved around with magnets and the audience can physically interact with. It will be performed in public places both in Chicago and in other cities.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

How the fund will be used

Mostly for the production cost of the wearable sculptures for public performances; Fabric(to print on), Printing cost, magnets, hiring a photographer and videographer for the final shoots with group of participants for the linkage between participants in fictional part, and if we raise $3750- extra will be used for renting a touch-screen for an exhibition.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Map of the Heart begins on a very personal, individual level and develops outward into the community in which it occurs to explore each person’s relationship with their social environment and enables the public to understand a city and the dwellers though empathy and compassion.

Words from the artist: I'm an artist working in various media includes text, public performance, multi-media installation, and interactive installation. I believe that one of the most important contemporary artists’ roles in this globalized and technology oriented society is to facilitate collective creative potentials, shared visions as well as stimulating the imagination beyond the limits of fixed identities of the public. My work initiates conversations and activates a social space in a public forum through subtle but intentionally selective encounters arts can provide.
