A new folk-rock musical out of Yale seeks money for a NYC Fringe production
Many of you may have heard about the tragic accident that took Marina's life on May 26. Many of you may have in fact discovered this project due to the media exposure that has resulted from the terrible circumstances and her incredible writing. While we are still very much processing this tragedy, indeed will be processing it the rest of our lives, we are also committed to continuing with our plans to stage the musical at FringeNYC in August. Marina cared passionately about this production of INDEPENDENTS, and so do we, both as a creative team and as close friends that want to get her remarkable voice and vision out into the world.
Your generosity so far has been astounding--we've reached our goal far earlier than we ever could have anticipated. Any further donations, far from being irrelevant or excessive, will actually be essential to helping produce this show on a level we previously thought unrealistic, with resources (including personnel) that would have been out of our reach. And you can still earn any of the remaining rewards. We can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate the support, and thank you so much for visiting this site.
Now for the (more upbeat) project details:
INDEPENDENTS is coming to NYC Fringe! But we need your help to make it happen!
INDEPENDENTS -- an original folk-rock musical -- chronicles nine friends living and working on a Revolutionary War-Era tall ship in 2012. Using historical reenactment as a cover, the eclectic crew of twentysomethings smuggles marijuana from Nova Scotia to Gloucester -- but when their captain disappears, financial pressures force the friends to attempt reenactment for real. While much of the musical is funny, INDEPENDENTS is ultimately a story of friends stuck in transition: not sure when they'll grow up or if they already have, falling in and out of love, and facing questions about the future they don't want to answer.
The creative team of INDEPENDENTS has been working hard to shape a new version of the show -- and we're excited to bring it to a NYC audience this summer. First, however, we need the resources to pay for everything from marketing to production to actors, designers, sets and costumes. The more money we're able to raise, the bigger and better our production will be -- and we'd all be incredibly grateful for your support in helping us bring this story to life again!
