2 years ago I wrote a simple Dating Sim. Game Engine, Music, Story. Everything. But I lost my artist...
2 years ago I wrote a dating sim game and a simple Story Scripting engine to go with it. I put 6 months of work into this (I was learning as I went along, and working a full time job). The game is done, except for art….
I have an artist lined up, but need funding to pay him for time and materials. in particular I want to furnish the artist with a Wacom Cintiq Tablet. He does his best work freehand, and a Cintiq is the closest thing to paper you can get.
You can see artist’s work on his Deviant Art page. It’s good stuff; what you’d get from a talented amateur. While a tablet doesn't radically improve art, it does make the process faster and cleaner.
CAUTION: The game loads in other browsers, but the backgrounds and music aren’t correct.
The game has a script, music (thanks to Creative Commons music and a lot of searching for suitable tracks on my part), save states and multiple paths. What it doesn’t have is art.
What will you get for supporting the project? There’s the game itself, plus the art. If you’re adventurous, you can use the game to write your own dating sims. There is an XML file spec for writing the game script and it’s not difficult to write for. Code will be released under the GPL, art under a Creative Common’s license.
In purely quantitative terms, it’s a great deal. There are 50 or so art assets needed for the game. Commissioning this work would cost about $50 per asset, or $2500, but the artist is an old friend and will do it for a good price.
We’re shooting for $1100 to the artists cover time & materials plus the 5% cut from Kickstart.
That said, the artist will do sketches for the bigger contributors.
$50: Contributors will be emailed a unique character sketch from the artist (artist’s choice).
$100: Contributors will be emailed a unique sketch of one RGB character by the artist (contributor’s choice).
$200: Contributors will be emailed a unique sketch of one RGB character by the artist (contributor’s choice), as well a signed hard copy of the sketch drawn free hand.
Everyone gets a shout out in the help menu .
As simple as the game is, it represents 6 months of long hours and stress on my part. I want to see the art done, and to play my game when it's finished.
If the Kickstart is successful the game art will be done by September. Sketches for contributors will start following after that. There could be as many as 20. They’ll be done in the order Contributions are received, so it could take until December for the last of them to be done (again, day jobs ).
Thanks to all for helping make my dream a reality!
